autoX Awards 2023: MG Comet EV Performance, Quality and Value for Money Ranked

autoX Awards 2023: The MG Comet EV is undeniably unique, effortlessly drawing attention everywhere it goes. Even when it was parked among a vast array of cars during the autoX mega test, the Comet stood out. It was arguably one of the top cars that all of us on the jury wanted to get our hands on. With a compact wheelbase, a narrow body, and the prowess of an electric motor, the Comet EV had the potential to offer an exhilarating drive during our test. It certainly doesn’t lack in terms of X-Factor, which is evident from its score as well. Plus, in terms of uniqueness, it rivals cars with significantly higher price tags!

As an electric vehicle, the Comet EV also scored well in terms of refinement. However, it was the impeccable quality of the car that really surprised us. Given its aggressive price tag, one would expect the automaker to have cut some corners in terms of quality, but that’s really not the case. Everything in the Comet’s interior oozes high quality – from materials and colour palette to the way all of it is put together. The infotainment system and the digital instrument cluster, too, don’t give you any reason to complain. While its design can be divisive – it’s something that you would either love or hate – it can’t be ignored.

The MG Comet EV is equipped with a single Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor, which makes a modest 41bhp of power and 110Nm of torque. Now, these figures are, perhaps, enough for driving in the city, given the purpose of the car. Owing to its narrow dimensions and skinny tyres, the Comet EV can either be loads of fun or downright scary when driven at the limit, depending on your skill level. In any case, the Comet is not a fast car and, therefore, didn’t do very well on the lap time chart. Additionally, with only two doors and a small boot space, the Comet was also not the most practical car in the line-up. Nevertheless, the Comet does well what it is supposed to do by being an affordable electric car for the masses, with a unique identity. And that makes it a contender for the ‘Best of 2023’.
