The new Mercedes-Benz CLA EV marks a major shift in how the brand is approaching its entry-level luxury cars.
Gone is the understated design language that defined Mercedes for decades. In its place is a far more expressive, technology-heavy approach - illuminated grilles, massive screens, AI integrations, and an unmistakably digital-first cabin experience. But this change hasn’t happened by accident. Mercedes says a massive intergenerational wealth transfer is underway globally, with younger buyers - particularly startup founders, tech professionals, and entrepreneurs - emerging as the next wave of luxury car customers. Naturally, their expectations of a car are very different.
The new CLA EV reflects that shift. It introduces Mercedes’ new MBOS operating system, AI-driven MBUX virtual assistant, deep integration with tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, and one of the longest claimed driving ranges in its class.
So, is Mercedes abandoning its traditional values of elegance and subtlety? Or is the brand simply evolving to match the expectations of the next generation? Shivank gets behind the wheel of the new CLA EV around Nandi Hills to find out.
