Tyres are what keep us grounded. Quite literally as we drive cars for a living, and in the case of the Jimny, there was a slight concern that its stock tyres might not be doing it justice. So, we gave it some fatter rubber.

‘Aren’t the stock tyres too thin? It looks like a toy car.’ – that seems to be a common concern among onlookers. I also feel the same, which is why we have replaced the stock skinny Bridgetsone Dueler H/T tyres (195/80-15) of our long termer with meaty Apollo Apterra AT2s (225/70-15).
Why the 225s over the more popular 215s or 235s? That’s because I feel the 215s don’t enhance the visual appearance by much & the 235s are stretching it too far and there’s a good chance of it fouling up with the suspension/wheel well. So, the 225s seem to be the ideal middle path. Plus, it doesn’t really make much of a difference in the circumference of the wheel – there’s a deviation of just 0.44%, which is perfect.
My first impressions of the Apterras are largely positive. The Jimny looks uber-cool now, while there isn’t much drop in fuel economy. Even the performance/acceleration hasn’t taken a hit as I had initially feared. The ride quality, though, has gotten a bit fidgety. Anyway, we will be doing a comprehensive tyre comparison test between the stock and upsized tyres next month, so stay tuned.
