One of the nicest things that I can say about Kia Seltos – in its latest form – is that it has been a surprise to drive. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine has been an absolute revelation, and it’s been an amazing experience driving it on my daily commute. The responsiveness of the engine, combined with the sharp shifts of the automatic gearbox have made my daily commutes an absolute breeze. On the other hand, my family has been really appreciative of the interior quality of the Seltos – the materials, the fit and finish has been absolutely top notch – and it really is a rich experience.

What I am not really font of, though, is the fuel efficiency. The Seltos’ powerful turbo-petrol is great in terms of performance but, on the flip side, it does make the Seltos a thirsty companion. During my daily commute, it struggles to return more than 10km/litre. On open roads/highways, it improves if you cruise at a steady pace (13-14km/l). The real problem is, you can’t drive this SUV leisurely. There’s so much power on offer that you inevitably end up stepping on the right pedal harder than you need to!

As a product though, what really changes the game with the Seltos, however, is how loaded the car comes – the standard equipment count is simply superb and that is what really changes the game for most customers. In a nutshell, it’s a product that has been tailormade for the Indian market, and its unique demands, and the success of the product reflects the efforts put in by the company. Success doesn’t come easy in the Indian automotive market, but Kia’s efforts show that if you put in the right efforts, it can be made to work.
