Formula 1 has released colourised and restored footage of its first-ever F1 world championship race at Silverstone, marking the 75th anniversary of the sport. Held on 13 May 1950, the British Grand Prix featured 21 cars and drew a crowd of over 150,000 spectators, including the British royal family. Nino Farina won the race for Alfa Romeo, leading a 1-2-3 finish ahead of teammates Luigi Fagioli and Reg Parnell.
Farina’s victory at the 1950 British Grand Prix was the start of his historic run to becoming Formula 1’s first world champion. He went on to win two more races that season, setting the standard for future drivers. To honour this milestone, Formula 1 has restored the original footage using modern colour enhancement, allowing fans to relive the moment in full detail.

The restored video was produced using advanced colourisation techniques and historical references. Experts recreated the original atmosphere—featuring green grass, blue skies, and the iconic red Alfa Romeo cars. This upgraded footage gives viewers a more immersive look at the early days of Formula 1, offering a rare perspective on one of motorsport’s most important races.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said: '75 years ago today our sport roared to life, and we are privileged to continue the incredible legacy of the brave drivers who raced for the ultimate prize on this day in 1950. It is fantastic to see this footage brought to life in full colour, and an amazing way to mark this historic moment.
'Today is a day when we can pay tribute to those who have come before us; drivers, engineers, team owners and of course, our fans, without whom we would not be in the position we are today. For 75 years we have innovated and driven the world forward, exciting our fans with feats of human endurance and speed that continue to amaze. Here is to the next 75 years and beyond for this incredible sport. Avanti Tutta!'
