Suzuki recently got the hopes of many Indian anime fans soaring high — only to crash them back to earth. At the Mela! Mela! Anime Japan!! event in New Delhi, Suzuki Motorcycle India announced a collaboration between its sporty Avenis scooter and the globally popular anime Naruto Shippuden. Naturally, this set imaginations racing — visions of a Naruto-themed Avenis with bold graphics and anime-inspired touches. Sadly, that’s where the dream ended. The scooter on display at the event was the same Avenis that’s already on sale in India, with no special graphics, styling tweaks, or limited-edition model to back the hype. The last time I went out on a track piloting a purpose-built race machine, it went rather well. I brought home a trophy for our magazine. That was on four wheels though. My ‘racing’ experience on two wheels has been nothing short of embarrassing. That’s primarily because the one race I participated in (more like forced to participate in), I was on the grid against teenagers weighing about as much as my left thigh! Just to give you a sense of what I’m saying – I weighed in about double of those kids, and the bike I was on had an insignificant (110cc) engine with cellular levels of power.

For our 4th anniversary in 2010-11, we headed to the MMSC track in Sriperumbudur where Jared and I rode a pair of race-prepped bikes from Yamaha and Honda, which respectively make up their 150cc one-make racing series. That was over 5 years ago, and things have definitely moved northwards since then. The Suzuki Gixxer cup bike proves that.

The changes made to the donor bike – the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/bike-reviews/2019-suzuki-gixxer-sf-review-first-ride-106005/">Suzuki Gixxer SF</a> – make the cup version of the bike feel sporty when riding it. The two primary changes that give the bike a sportier feel are afforded by the lowered front end which gets clip-ons instead of the bridge clamp on the stock bike, and the footpegs placement that’s moved a bit aft. I’d actually like to see similar pegs placement even on the SF – it’ll definitely suit, and enhance, the intended character of the bike. Other changes include a free-flow exhaust that makes the cup bike sound like a racing machine and a better, performance biased, air filter. There should be special mention of the tyres. We rode the bike in mostly clear and dry conditions, and the grip from the specially developed softer-compound tyres was fantastic! Even under panic braking situations, there was no lump-in-the-throat roguery – and other than the occasional skip and bounce, the bike retained its composure. Lovely!

I expected a little more muscle in the engine, but it remains a 14.8bhp single that develops 14Nm. There has been a change in the sprocketing to aid top end performance, but it would’ve been nice to see a couple of bhps being added to the spec sheet.

Having not been here in over 7 years, I was heading out onto a track that I’d almost completely forgotten. To make things worse, I’d never been on a bike around here. And so, in the pit lane of the Kari Motor Speedway, I was feeling a bit unsettled. If you recall my piece on the Gixxer SF at the BIC, you’ll remember me mentioning that it’s one of those bikes that instantly makes you feel comfortable and lifts your confidence levels immensely. This was no different.

You see, the thing with race-prepped machines – especially in a racetrack atmosphere – is that even if the mods are relatively tame, there’s still an underlying (if superficial) violence to them. At least that’s the perception, and so the brain readjusts itself and shifts into attack-mode almost immediately.

The Gixxer cup bike is a naturally likeable thing, and I felt quite comfortable on it right from the start. The Kari circuit has a technical layout for most part, and there’s one particular section that I’ve never really been able to master properly – the reducing radius bit that flows from turn 2 into turn 3. Well, the bike has such good overall balance that I didn’t really have any difficulty shedding my mental block around that corner. I may not have been the fastest around it, but I was feeling increasingly confident every time I went around it. That in itself was a small victory for me.

The turn-in is crisp, the communication from the tyres is fabulous, and the handling is sufficiently sharp and confidence inspiring. I did, however, feel that the calibration of the brakes could be a bit better and it could be a bit more front-biased. But, when I think about it, this is a bike for racers who probably brake less than half of what I do – so it’s perhaps a very good setup. The power should’ve been around 20-25bhp, but then there can never be enough power – right? All-in-all, a knee-scraping, properly giggling lad is what it made out of me. And that’s no bad thing!

Suzuki Gixxer 110 Review, Test Ride

The Gixxer 110 is one of the most enticing 110cc motorcycles in the Japanese automaker's portfolio. We ride the track-biased Gixxer at the Kari Motor Speedway for our extensive review.

Suzuki makes its presence felt in the 150cc segment with a brand new Gixxer. The question is, can this bike live up to its illustrious name? So we did the Suzuki Gixxer to find out if it lives up to the reputation of its name.

Drenched to the bone, cursing the weather gods, and the start-stop traffic – all of which was making the mood quite gloomy indeed! Unfortunately, this was how my Suzuki Gixxer ride started. At the risk of sounding cliché, the only silver lining I could think of was the winding road waiting for me as we headed up to the hill town of Lavasa.

This new 155cc bike, or as the Japanese bike-maker refers to it, ‘street sport’ motorcycle, was the centre of attention for most of the passer-by’s on the road. The beautifully sculpted 12-litre tank, with its angular and bold side cladding design, made the Suzuki Gixxer look straight out of a Manga Japanese graphic novel. The dummy tank extensions increased its style quotient further by making it look edgier than any other bike in its class. Being a naked bike, the Suzuki Gixxer has no unnecessary fairings – and the slightly angled, yet perfectly contoured seat, made it appear like a Cheshire cat ready to pounce. At a glance, the saddle looks slightly small but it is very comfortable for the rider. It’s mesmerising even from the rear – the body coloured grab rails, like the ones in the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/bike-reviews/yamaha-r15-v3-review-first-ride-103358/">Yamaha R15</a>, are tucked in smartly beside the seat. The icing on the cake comes in the form of the LED tail lamps. But Suzuki’s masterstroke is the dual muffler in chrome – which showcases the sporty heritage of the GSX-R Series. The digital LCD instrument cluster mirrors a smart phone. It comes with two trip modes, a fuel gauge, clock, and even a redline indicator.

What was fun to see was the disbelief in people’s eyes that Suzuki could actually come up with such a spectacular looking bike. Before I could exit the highway and the head for the hills, I had to stop many times to answer a volley of questions – how much, how does it ride, is it powerful enough? But not once did anyone ask, ‘kitna deti hai’? This gave us a glimpse into how buyers have matured, and how they’re now focused on other features apart from just fuel economy. But, just for the record, the Suzuki Gixxer claims a segment leading mileage of 63.5km/l. In real world conditions, it should be in the mid-50’s – which is very respectable.

Getting back to my plight of being stuck in slow moving traffic – I realised how well the beefed up 41mm front forks and the seven way adjustable rear mono shock carpeted the broken road. During our Suzuki Gixxer, I also realised how the bike also spared my back from a bone jarring experience by not crashing into potholes.

Timing is everything, and, as I finally reached the ghat roads, the clouds too took pity on me and the downpour settled into a light drizzle. In terms of engine refinement, Suzuki has done a marvellous job – and an audible macho grunt complements its sporty image. The Suzuki Gixxer’s initial response is linear in nature, which is ideal for city conditions, but leaves you wanting more power in the hills. At mid-range, the bike cruises smoothly – but beyond this the power tends to simmer down, which could be the reason why it’s fuel-efficient. But, honestly, being predominately a city bike, 14.5bhp provides more than enough power. And, even when pushed to the limit, the engine never plays an off-tune hum. The Suzuki Gixxer continues to be a smooth operator thanks to its sleek 5-speed gearbox, which is very precise, and finding neutral is always just a click away.

With wide and virtually empty roads, I couldn’t resist taking on the swooping turns and the Suzuki Gixxer happily obliged. It never twitched nervously, and always held its line. Keep in mind that the tarmac was wet, but this is where the 17-inch MRF tyres flexed their muscles and provided excellent traction – which allowed me to continue to attack the curves without ever second guessing the bike.

During our Suzuki Gixxer 150, the bike certainly made us believe that it can be a genuine all-rounder in the 150cc segment. There’s more to it than just its radical looks – its razor sharp handling will be pure joy for enthusiasts.
