Up to 24 variants of the Nissan and Datsun can be purchased from CSD depots across the country via a fully online process.

Nissan India has formally announced the availability of its entire range of Nissan and Datsun via the Canteen Stores Department (CSD). As of now, a total of 24 model variants of the Nissan Magnite, Kicks, Datsun Redi-Go, Go, and Go Plus are on offer at CSD depots across the country at discounted prices. For example, the Magnite MT XE variant that retails for ₹5.6 lakh (ex-showroom) is on sale at ₹4.82 lakh for CSD customers. Likewise, the top-spec Turbo CVT XV Premium version that retails for ₹9.7 lakh (ex-showroom) can be purchased via the CSD at ₹8.21 lakh.

The entire buying process for CSD customers – from the selection of the vehicle to the uploading of dealer and customer documents – can be done online. Further, defence personnel can also use Nissan's digital platform, Shop@Home, to book their vehicle online. And they can simply avail CSD benefits by intimating the dealership.

Nissan & Datsun cars now available at Canteen Stores Department (CSD)

As of now, a total of 24 model variants of the Nissan Magnite, Kicks, Datsun Redi-Go, Go and Go Plus are on offer at CSD depots across the country, at discounted prices. The entire buying process for CSD beneficiaries is online.

Any new vehicle sold in India from April 1, 2021, will come equipped with dual front airbags. Manufacturers have been given a deadline until August 1, 2021, to update current models that do not adhere to the upcoming safety norm. 

The driver airbag in passenger cars was mandated back on July 1, 2019, but this time around, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has confirmed (via Tweet) that the new vehicles sold in the Indian market from April 1, 2021, will be equipped with dual airbags.

However, the current vehicles on sale in India have been given a deadline of August 1, 2021, to meet the new safety norms, i.e, the passenger vehicles on sale, which are sold only with a driver-side airbag, should be updated with two front airbags.

The tweet also mentions that the passenger side airbag should meet the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 145 till the corresponding Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications are notified under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

The inclusion of another air-bag in the entry-level models of a few A-segment hatchbacks will increase the price by Rs 10,000 to 15,000 across variants.

Maruti Suzuki’s entry-level hatchback, the Alto, which is priced at Rs 2.99 lakh, could see a price bump, once the manufacturer updates it with dual front airbags.

Similarly, the Renault Kwid comes equipped with only a driver-side airbag on the lower STD variant, which is priced at Rs 3.12 lakh. It could possibly see a price hike of approximately Rs 10,000 to 15,000, once the hatchback adheres to the new safety norms.

The Datsun Redi-GO, which retails at Rs 2.92 lakh for the base variant, could see a price revision, most likely breaching the Rs 3 lakh mark.

All prices of the aforementioned cars are ex-showroom, Delhi.

Government mandates dual front airbags for new cars from April 1

Priced starting Rs 2.83 lakh, the base D trim of the 2020 Datsun redi-GO face-lift is now Rs 3,000 dearer than before. The fully-loaded variant with the AMT option demands Rs 4.77 lakh 

The Indian automotive industry has only just resumed a few weeks back and it has already been raining launches. Datsun is the latest carmaker to join the slew of launches. The redi-GO face-lift starts at Rs 2.83 lakh for the base trim and goes right up to Rs 4.77 lakh for the top-spec version. The entry-level offering demands Rs 3,000 more than before while the top-end variant is priced at a premium of roughly Rs 40,000.

Datsun has also given the red-GO some much needed cosmetic update. The 2020 redi-GO’s design is in line with the new trend of fitting cars with over-sized grilles. The massive black honey-come grille is outlined by brushed aluminium finish. Other changes to the front include a large L-shaped DRL, sleeker headlights and a mildly redone bumper. The redi-GO is the first car in its class to come fitted with LED fog lamps. Along the side, the car has now been fitted with larger ORVMs that are internally adjustable, and wheel caps that look like alloy wheels. The rear seems to be somewhat identical to the model it replaces. A top-speed variant of the redi-GO comes equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice recognition. In terms of safety, the driver side airbag is standard across variants but only the top-end AMT trim gets passenger side airbags. ABS with EBD, Overspeed warning, and rear parking sensors are standard (top-end trims get reversing camera).

The 2020 Datsun redi-GO has also gone through some changes under the hood. The refreshed model now gets BS6 compliant iterations of the 0.8-litre motor as well as the 1.0-litre motor. The former makes peak power of 53.6bhp and max torque of 72Nm. The larger 1.0-litre motor, on the other hand, is good for 67bhp and 91Nm. Both engines come paired with a 5-speed manual, but only the larger motor comes with the AMT option, that too only in the top-spec trim. Datsun claims that the redi-GO 0.8 will return 20.71km/l, while the 1.0-litre with the MT and AMT will deliver 21.7km/l and 22km/l.

The Datsun redi-GO will continue to compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and the Renault Kwid.&nbsp;

With Datsun releasing the teaser image of the redi-GO a few weeks back, we have been expecting them to launch the car some time this month. While there is no official launch date announced just as yet, they have, however, launched the BS6 compliant GO and GO+. The hatchback offering is priced starting Rs 3.99 lakh and the top-spec variant demands Rs 6,25 lakh. The compact MPV, on the other hand, ranges from Rs 4.20 lakh to Rs 6.70 lakh. All prices ex-showroom.

Both cars now get cleaner BS6 compliant iterations of the same old 1.2-litre petrol motor. This engine comes paired with a 5-speed manual and a CVT option. The former makes 67bhp and 104Nm, while the latter is marginally punchier developing 76.4bhp. Torque rating for the CVT remains the same at 104Nm. While all other carmakers offer AMTs in this segment, Datsun is the only brand to fit both these cars with a CVT. &nbsp;

The GO and the GO+ remain largely unchanged from the model before it. The exterior design as well as the feature list has been carried forward. Top-spec variants of both cars come with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other features include electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear wipe/wash, 14-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and LED DRLs. Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and reverse parking assist.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Like a lot of other carmakers, Datsun too is offering several finance options and schemes to stimulate customer demand. The company has announced a ‘Buy now Pay later’ scheme as per which customers can choose to start their EMIs in 2021. Customers can also get 100% finance, low EMI, and EMI assurance benefits.

Datsun has just released a teaser image of the upcoming redi-GO hatchback. The updated model is expected to have some design changes, feature upgrades and of course a BS-VI compliant engine 

Nissan India has dropped a teaser image of the upcoming Datsun redi-GO face-lift. As you’d expect, the redi-GO will now feature a BS-VI compliant engine. Aside from the updated heart, expect the hatchback to also feature some changes in terms of design. The image released gives a glimpse of the 2020 redi-GO with a larger grille, reworked headlamps with L-shaped Daytime Running Lamps and a Datsun badge on the fender above the wheel arch. The image also reveals a new wheel design – although the teaser image deceives you into thinking that it will sport alloy wheels, it is unlikely to be offered in this class of cars. The redi-GO face-lift will continue to sit on wheel caps. At the back, the image shows a stubby roof-mounted rear spoiler – it is likely that this will be limited only to the top-spec variants. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Datsun hasn’t quite released any images of the interior but we expect it to feature some changes too. Just like the Renault Kwid, expect the redi-GO also to come with a touchscreen infotainment unit.

At the heart, the redi-GO will continue with the 799cc three-pot petrol motor that will continue to make 54 bhp and 72Nm. This engine will come paired with a 5-speed manual. Just like before, the redi-GO will also come with a 1.0-litre engine option in the higher-spec models. This one will also continue to make 67 horses and 91Nm, and will come mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT.

The last update that the car received was in July 2019, when some new safety features were added to the list. Despite the addition, the redi-GO only scored a single-star in the Global NCAP tests. It remains to be seen if Datsun has really worked on this aspect in the updated 2020 redi-GO.

The Global NCAP has released 2019's&nbsp;first round of&nbsp;'Safer Cars For India' crash test results. Here's a look at how the Datsun RediGo fared in the test.

We're afraid the news isn't&nbsp;good for the RediGo, as it&nbsp;has only scored a 1-star safety rating in GNCAP's crash test. However, GNCAP conducted the test on an&nbsp;older version of&nbsp;the RediGo. In July 2019, <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/2019-datsun-redigo-launched-with-new-safety-features-106304/">Datsun had launched an updated version of the RediGo</a> equipped with the mandatory safety kit (Vehicle Dynamic Control, Speed Alert System, &amp; Seat Belt Reminder).

Coming back to the test results, the 1-star rating translates into a single star for adult occupant protection (8.36 out of&nbsp;a possible 17 points) and two stars for child occupant protection (15.63&nbsp;out of&nbsp;a possible 49&nbsp;points). Despite offering a front driver's&nbsp;airbag (the RediGo offers a single airbag as standard), the chest &amp; head protection for the driver were rated as poor &amp; adequate, respectively. An 'unstable' footwell further brought down the driver's protection score. In comparison, protection levels for&nbsp;the front passenger were marginally better, with the head &amp; lower leg protection rated as good.&nbsp;However, as per the NCAP guidelines, poor protection for any of the critical body regions, in this case, the driver's chest, limits the star rating to one for the adults.

In terms&nbsp;of child protection too, the RediGo failed to impress. The forward-facing child seat for a 3-year-old dummy did not prevent excessive forward movement during the impact, resulting in poor head protection. Further, the&nbsp;static rear 3-point belts created difficulties in the proper and safe installation of the Child Restraint System (CRS) for an 18-month-old dummy. Due to head contact with the front seat for&nbsp;the 18-month-old dummy, along with the missing ISOFIX anchorage points, the Datsun RediGo could only manage two stars for child occupant protection.

In other news, <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/industry-news/nissan-planning-to-axe-datsun-brand-106731/">Nissan is reportedly mulling over the idea to axe the Datsun brand entirely</a>, as part of its restructuring goals. However, Nissan is yet to share an official statement on the matter.

The news isn't good for the RediGo as it has only scored a 1-star safety rating in GNCAP's crash test. The 1-star rating translates into a single star for adult occupant protection (8.36 out of a possible 17 points) and two stars for child occupant protection ( 15.63 out of a possible 49 points).

As part of its restructuring plan post the Carlos Ghosn era, Nissan is reportedly planning to pull the plug on the Datsun brand.&nbsp;

According to Reuters, Nissan may pull the plug on its budget arm Datsun in the coming time. The news agency has reportedly spoken to two company insiders with the direct knowledge of the matter, and they suggested that it’s part of the firm’s restructuring plan, post the Carlos Ghosn pay scandal.

There’s no official word from Nissan as yet, but there’s a likely possibility of Datsun getting ditched soon. You see, the brand was launched back in 2013 to resurrect Nissan’s fortunes in the budget end of the segment in developing countries, including India, but it&nbsp;never really took off as expected. The Datsun brand has merely existed&nbsp;in India thus far with products like the Go, Go+ and Redigo, and they are struggling to find many takers in our market, to say the least.&nbsp;Currently, Datsun also sells products in Russia, South Africa, Indonesia and Kazakhstan. The company produces its vehicles majorly in India and Russia.

At the same time, it’s also rumoured that in some markets Datsun is eating into Nissan's sales, especially in markets where the group has a market share of one to two per cent. You&nbsp;could also say that it's the case in India too, where&nbsp;both the brands are&nbsp;suffering badly, thanks to their mediocre products,&nbsp;while the&nbsp;competition from the likes of&nbsp;Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai doesn’t make their life easy either.

More information should be out in the coming days, as we believe Nissan will release an official statement to throw more light on this matter.

Nissan planning to axe Datsun brand

According to Reuters, Nissan may pull the plug on its budget arm Datsun in the coming time. The news agency has reportedly spoken to two company insiders with the direct knowledge of the matter, and they suggested that it’s part of the firm’s restructuring plan, post the Carlos Ghosn pay scandal.

The Datsun Go &amp; Go+ are the only cars in their respective segments that come with a CVT automatic.&nbsp;

Datsun has launched the CVT versions of the Go and Go+ at Rs 5.94 lakh and Rs 6.58 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. With this, these two models become the first models in their respective segments to get a CVT automatic gearbox – most of the other rivals use the more affordable automated manual transmission&nbsp;(AMT).

The Go and Go+ CVT variants come powered by the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that does duty in their existing manual versions. However, the CVT version sees a power bump of close to 9bhp as it produces 76bhp. Torque is unchanged at 104Nm. The CVT version also comes with ‘Sports’ mode for better performance.

As for their features and equipment, both the cars are decently equipped. The top-end T(O) variant gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED DRLs, rear washer/wiper, electrically adjustable ORVMs and 14-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Safety net includes dual-airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, et al. The Go and Go+ are offered with 2 years standard warranty, while extended warranty package is optional to up to five years.

ThE Datsun Go CVT will compete with the AMT versions of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Tata Tiago, Hyundai Santro, et al, while the Go+ will fight against the newly launched Renault Triber, albeit the Renault doesn't come with an automatic version as yet.&nbsp;

Datsun Go & Go+ CVT versions launched

Datsun has launched the CVT versions of the Go and Go+ at Rs 5.94 lakh and Rs 6.58 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. With this, these two models become the first models in their respective segment to get a CVT automatic gearbox.

Purely based on the facelift launched some time ago, here are the detailed shots of what's new with the CVT derivatives of the Datsun Go and Go+. Also, read our review to see how capable these hatchbacks are.

The Datsun Go &amp; Go+ get another set of updates, ensuring that they not only look better but also come with traction control and automatic transmissions. But is it too little too late for this Datsun duo?&nbsp;

Stringent safety norms have pushed Indian small cars into new territory. How else can you explain the presence of airbags and anti-lock brakes in entry-level cars such as the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Renault Kwid?&nbsp;

Given the priorities of Indian customers and the price sensitivity of our market, safety features have always taken a back seat to convenience features. But things are changing. In fact, one carmaker has taken it a step further and is offering a safety feature that’s been, thus far, unheard of in the B1 segment. Yup, I’m talking about traction control in Datsun’s recently updated Go and Go+ hatchbacks.

Datsun’s Go models have also been missing an automatic gearbox all this time. And an automatic is a must these days, given how affordable two-pedal technology has become – which, in turn, has considerably increased the sales of automatic cars.&nbsp;

Datsun India realised this, and, as they say, it’s a case of ‘better late than never.’ So, ladies and gentlemen, here they are – the Datsun Go and Go+ CVT automatics.&nbsp;

Under the hood 
The Go and Go+ automatics continue to be powered by Nissan’s 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 76bhp at 6,000rpm and 104Nm at 4,400rpm. The only difference is that here the engine sends power to the wheels via a CVT automatic gearbox. This, in fact, is the same combination as the one in the Nissan Micra automatic.&nbsp;

In terms of driveability, though, for some reason, in D mode, acceleration seems to be more restrained than in the Micra. This could very well be in the interest of fuel efficiency, but, at the same time, the powertrain has higher NVH in the low to mid range.&nbsp;

So, while the acceleration is acceptable under linear throttle inputs, it doesn’t feel quite as smooth as the Micra automatic. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that it feels a bit coarse. Demand more power for a quick overtaking manoeuvre, and you’ll feel the powertrain struggle, as the transmission suffers from that dreaded rubber band effect of CVTs. If you keep your foot in it, the transmission does finally catch up though, and provide stronger acceleration.&nbsp;

Even in city traffic conditions, the Go CVT’s powertrain has its limitations, unless its absolute smooth sailing or you’re driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic – both of which are ideal conditions to enjoy a smooth and easy drive. In fact, as expected, at slow speeds, the transmission is smoother than the AMTs in most other small cars. &nbsp;

Sport mode! 
Fortunately, the saving grace is that the CVT has Sport mode, which can be activated via a button on the driver’s side of the gear lever. Depress it, and the electronics ease off and allow the transmission to rev more freely, causing the NVH to go down – making the engine dramatically less coarse.&nbsp;

At this point, acceleration is quicker, and the car generally feels nicer to drive. Step on the pedal, and there’s still noticeable lag, but the whole process is now quicker – and you enjoy driving the car more because the part-throttle response is now much better.&nbsp;

The driving mannerisms of both the Go and Go+ models are very similar, and I’d go as far as to say that these cars are best suited for urban driving. The light steering and limited high-speed performance, combined with the soft suspension setup, cause the car to wallow over high-speed road undulations. And, of course, there’s a fair amount of body roll around high-speed bends.

Urban dweller 
But, then, these cars were never built for highway cruising. These are compact, affordable hatchbacks, with the advantage of Japanese durability. The recent facelift has truly pushed their desirability quotient up several notches, with better interiors and modern equipment, such as a touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.&nbsp;

The screen is wonderfully clear and glare-free. I just wish that the stereo’s sound quality was better and that the USB port wasn’t tucked away under the gear lever housing – it’s quite tricky to access as a result, especially with the handbrake engaged.

And therein lies the problem with the Datsun Go and Go+. Both these cars are quite old now, and their ergonomic flaws are quite evident – from the high-set nonadjustable steering wheel and a very tight third row in the Go+ to the lack of an external tailgate opener, they’ve both begun to show their age.

Nevertheless, Datsun has done a good job with this facelift – both cars now appear more upmarket with their snazzy allow wheels, better interiors, more equipment, and automatic transmissions. If only Datsun had started out with these models, the Go nameplate could have had a far brighter future in India… &nbsp;
