With the amount of R&amp;D that was done in India on the Victoris, you’ve been able to reduce the development time dramatically. Just how much of that cycle have you been able to shrink?


Our endeavour is to deliver products to customers as quickly as possible, and for that we’ve had to become much more agile. Our engineering, supply-chain and production teams are now doing many activities simultaneously – testing, design, everything – so the overall development time is coming down quite a lot. In today’s market, customers expect new products frequently, so you have to be nimble. And, in the times to come, you’ll see our launch timelines reducing quite substantially.

How are you using AI, operationally and during the development process?

One of our key objectives is to embrace AI. And not only from a design point of view – we want to use it to improve the overall functioning of the organisation. So, AI will be a key driver for us in times to come.

Your CNG penetration has risen sharply, to above 30%, as filling stations have expanded across the country. Do you think EVs will need a similar push in public charging for adoption to really pick up?

Let me first tell you that our CNG penetration is now 37%. And, yes, what you’re saying is absolutely right. Fundamentally, there are three problems with EV adoption today, which is why penetration is still 5%, or lower, despite so many models in the market.

First, many of the early products didn’t give customers the range that was claimed. So, there was always the worry that, "If I buy an EV, will I actually get the claimed range?"Second, in India, people still don’t have the money to keep two cars. They want to buy a primary car that needs to work for everything – intercity and intracity, or any use case for that matter. And for that you need to have confidence in public charging.





Third, the public-charging economics are still not viable, because 95% of people charge at home. So, it becomes the classic chicken-or-egg story.

Whoever is able to support the public-charging network, provide a product with good range, and, importantly, provide good after-sales – once these three things are in place, EV penetration will start moving up.

Given that Maruti Suzuki has the largest sales &amp; service network in the country, will electrifying that entire ecosystem become a key advantage as you enter the EV space?

As you would have seen from our recent announcements, we are addressing many of the concerns customers have. And, as we’ve said earlier, being the market leader, we don’t want to launch an EV unless we can provide a complete, holistic solution. We unveiled the eVX Concept at the Auto Expo last year, but till you’re not providing that full ecosystem to the customer, there’s no point in launching the product. That is exactly what we’re working on.

Maruti Suzuki used to have over 50% market share. Today it’s less than that. What is the strategy to return to 50%+?

We are going to address all segments of customers. The Victoris is clearly targeted at the Gen Z customer. The big shift in the industry has been SUVs – their contribution has gone up to almost 56%. In 2019-20, it used to be around 25%. We didn’t have enough products in that space. That is the fundamental reason for the slump.

The industry underwent a structural change, and we have addressed it. By 2030, you will see things going back to the way they were before.

After the GST cuts, demand has surged. How long do you see that lasting?

In October, retail sales were up almost 30%. In November also, we are doing great. There was pent-up demand because customers held back in August. So, I think till December, demand should remain good.

India has only 34 cars per 1,000 people and nearly 27 crore two-wheelers. When these two-wheeler customers upgrade, GST 2.0 is surely going to help.

e Vitara, Victoris & Faster R&D: Maruti’s New Product Playbook – Partho Banerjee, Maruti Suzuki

With the amount of R&D that was done in India on the Victoris, you’ve been able to reduce the development time dramatically. Just how much of that cycle have you been able to shrink?

The EV transition in the Indian market has been an interesting shift to track. In practical terms, the mainstream momentum was driven by the Tata Nexon EV, which offered customers an affordable entry into the world of EVs – a trend reflected in its sales numbers. Despite its success, most players in the mass-market segment remained hesitant – some were held back by the time required to develop an EV for India, while others were uncertain about the success of mass-market EVs in India.

All this, however, changed with the success of the MG Windsor, effectively dispelling doubts and uncertainty surrounding mass-market EVs in India. The result? Well, manufacturers who once waited on the sidelines are now either launching affordable EVs or have a clear roadmap to do so.

 
 
 
 
It’s not surprising, then, that India’s largest automotive manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, too, is all set to enter the EV segment, with the soon-to-be-launched e Vitara. Interestingly, we drove the e Vitara in the UK, but it’s actually produced exclusively in India and exported worldwide, including to Japan. So, how does Maruti Suzuki’s very first EV come across in our initial evaluation?

<h2>e Vitara Design Review: Conservative Yet Distinctive SUV Styling </h2>

In terms of styling, the e Vitara carves out a distinct identity within the Maruti Suzuki lineup, even though it clearly borrows styling cues from other products in the range. The first thing you’ll notice about the SUV is its butch stance with squared-off arches and large 18-inch wheels. Both front and rear designs are unique and well-executed.

 One detail that immediately catches the eye is the unusually high shoulder line. As a result, the glasshouse is fairly small compared to its rivals – a design choice with both aesthetic and functional implications, and one I’ll return to later.



 
 
 
 
Inside, the cabin also exudes a blend of familiarity and novelty. There are many unique touches here, but a few components come from the Maruti Suzuki parts bin, which is quite expected from a mass-market car produced by a large manufacturer. The space management is simply brilliant here, which makes the cabin feel very spacious. The front seats are very comfortable, although the driver’s seat feels a bit too high, even at its lowest setting.

Some of the new elements in the cabin are genuinely impressive. For instance, the new steering wheel looks premium and feels solid to hold, while the new centre console, featuring a new shift knob, works excellently. In terms of features, the e Vitara will be the brand’s second model to feature Level 2 ADAS and seven airbags – both of which are expected to be offered in the India-spec version.

<h2>e Vitara Battery, Range &amp; Performance: What to Expect</h2>

The e Vitara we drove was equipped with the larger 61kWh battery pack; a 49kWh version will also be offered upon its launch in India. Maruti Suzuki claims a range of 424.8km for the larger battery pack. The UK-spec version of the e Vitara, with the larger battery, produces 174bhp and 193Nm of torque and has a claimed 0 – 100km/h time of 8.7 seconds. Now, on paper, these numbers may seem modest, especially in a market obsessed with insane torque and power figures, but our time with the SUV told a different story.

 On British B-roads, the e Vitara was genuinely usable, with linear acceleration that felt strong. The Sport mode noticeably sharpens the throttle response, while the ECO mode reins things in for better range. On smooth British roads, the suspension felt very well set up, and the ride quality was excellent. I’m sure the company will retune the suspension for Indian roads. And given the ride quality of recent Maruti Suzuki models, I’m certain its engineers will do a fine job.

 
 
 
 


Given the limited time we had with the car, we couldn’t explore its handling in any meaningful way. We did, however, get enough time to get an idea of its real-world range, which should be 350 – 360km on a single charge – enough for the needs of urban commuters.<h2>e Vitara Expected Price and Rivals in India</h2>

The larger question now revolves around the e Vitara’s positioning and pricing. I think it’ll most likely be positioned against the Windsor and Nexon. If the manufacturer manages to price it competitively, the wide appeal of the Maruti Suzuki brand could give it a significant sales advantage. And with its launch scheduled around the corner, we won’t have to wait much longer for answers.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara First Drive Review - Making the EV Leap

Maruti Suzuki is all set to enter the mass market EV segment with the e VITARA. We take a quick look at the UK-spec version ahead of its launch in India.

 <h2>Maruti Suzuki e Vitara: Battery, Range, and Charging&nbsp;</h2>Maruti Suzuki offers the e Vitara with two battery variants: a 49kWh with 142bhp and a 61kWh with 172bhp. Both are paired with a front-mounted electric motor.&nbsp;It is to be noted that the torque remains constant at 192.5Nm across both versions. The 49kWh&nbsp;variant is exclusive to the base Delta trim, while the Zeta and Alpha trims come with&nbsp;the larger 61kWh battery. Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Launch: Expected Arrival Date for Electric SUV in India

The prices for the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara are expected to be revealed in early 2026, while bookings are set to open soon. Upon its launch, the e Vitara will compete against the Hyundai Creta Electric and the Mahindra BE 6.
