Plastic quality is a letdown

<p>If this model is being sold at NEXA dealerships, then it is a premium segment car. However, despite the effort, Maruti has not gone into that segment successfully as the interiors of the S-Cross are like any other Maruti car till now. Neither are they different nor are they made of premium materials. Plastic quality is pretty bad too.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>


Good suspension setup

<p>The S-Cross is a very good car for daily city driving because it can deal with all types of roads, thanks to a smart suspension setup. It strikes a good balance between stability and absorbing meanest of potholes.</p>


Rock solid at high speed

<p>How good is this car for long highway drives! I travel to various cities in India by road and so I need a trustworthy all-rounder which is exactly what the S-Cross is proving to be. Very happy with my car.</p>

So it retains its commendable highway cruising capabilities while continuing to remain well equipped and spacious. But the update has seen Maruti drop the enthusiast-oriented 1.6-litre engine. Is that a cause for worry? Well, we had to head to Udaipur to find out.</p>

<p>The festive season is here and it's time for consumer goods industries across the board to roll out a range of offers to entice customers nationwide. When it comes to the passenger car industry, the season sees a range of new <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-car-launches-in-india/">car launches</a> as well limited/special edition models for mass market cars to allure new car buyers into showrooms. And here comes Maruti Suzuki’s big offering for the season, the S-Cross face-lift.</p>

<p>Armed with an entirely new front fascia, the updated Maruti S-Cross has been given a spruced appeal to make prospective customers turn around to take a second glance. And on the face of it, it has to be said that Maruti has carried out the job rather well. The nose of the car now gets a more upright stance thanks to that chunky&nbsp;chrome grille that’s impossible to miss. The revised front air-dam in the bumper along with the faux skid plate work to give the car a wide appearance. But it’s that resculpted bonnet with a raised contour and lines that mimic a power dome that truly works with the grille to give the car a more aggressive face. <p>Exterior styling changes on the car are otherwise limited to new LED tail lamps and diamond cut alloy wheels. While on the inside the dashboard has been given a once over and gets different soft-touch plastics in front of the passenger, piano black surrounds for the centre air vents and infotainment system, a revised instrument cluster with SHVS stamped in the speedometer and the infotainment system has been updated with android auto and apple car play. These changes aside, the 2017 S-Cross remains identical to the model it replaces. And that’s a good thing, for at the core of this car are some very good characteristics that continue to impress.</p>

<p>For starters, the leather seats continue to offer great cushioning for the seat base and lower back – both front and rear. It’s very easy to find an ideal driving position thanks to the rake and reach adjustable steering wheel and height adjustable driver’s seat. There continues to be more than ample rear legroom for occupants as well as a reclining backrest. Although I do wish its straight-ahead position was the reclined stage and it reclined further, but I guess that would eat up too much into boot space which is at a premium. At 353 litres its more than enough for your shopping runs, but take four people on a road trip and you are bound to need more luggage room.</p>

<p>But where the S-Cross redeems itself is perhaps one of the most beneficial updates this face-lift has brought, and that’s the incorporation of Suzuki’s SHVS mild hybrid system. This is bound to make the car more efficient than the earlier model. What the mild hybrid system does, in a nutshell, is improve fuel efficiency with the help of an engine stop/start system, power assistance and brake energy regeneration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So, every time you brake, the system stores kinetic energy and releases it to assist at certain times during acceleration. This electrical assistance to the engine reduces load, leading to higher fuel efficiency. The engine is also switched off automatically when you come to a halt in traffic or at a set of lights.</p>

<p>On the performance front, the SHVS system doesn’t bring any changes as acceleration appears to be on par with the non-SHVS model. However, a thorough test report will reveal details.</p>

<p>For now, it’s worth noting that while enthusiasts are still nursing the 1.6 hangover, However, I can’t stress how much more user-friendly the 1.3-litre engine is to use in the city. For there is virtually no turbo lag, so you tend not to lurch forward in traffic once the turbo comes on song. The engine works very well off-boost and you are never really wanting for more poke while driving in traffic. Of course, the strong push in your back acceleration is missed once the road opens up. But bear in mind that I have clocked in excess of 180 km/h (indicated) on a closed track in the previous 1.3 S-Cross. And that from a 1.3-litre diesel engined car is commendable I would say. However, there is a fair bit of NVH that seeps into the cabin like earlier. Another change worth noting is that&nbsp;the steering now feels a little lighter than earlier and I wish it offered more feedback around the dead centre position.</p>

<p>Maruti has made no changes to the suspension of the car so it continues to offer a very comfortable ride for passengers both front and rear. And from past experience, I can tell you that the S-Cross sits very well on the road at high speeds in confidence and is undeterred by road undulations thanks also to its long wheelbase and wide footprint, which has improved courtesy the slightly wider 215/60 section tyres on the new car.</p>

<p>The summation for the new Maruti Suzuki S-Cross 1.3 SHVS would then have to read that this is a good evolution for the car. It’s now got a more prominent front-end design; a couple more useful features and it will be more fuel efficient. Maruti Suzuki S-Cross SHVS Review, First Drive

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross SHVS is the flagship product from the homegrown carmaker. For 2017, the company has pushed out a mid-life update to the S-Cross. However, they have axed out the 1.6-diesel. Here's what we think.

<p><em>Maruti Suzuki makes another attempt at breaking into the premium segment with the S-Cross. We drive it to see if it has what it takes to compete in an increasingly tough segment, and also elevate the Maruti Suzuki brand at the same time.</em></p>

<p>The premium car segment has been a tough nut to crack for a number of carmakers in India. The combination of a good product, along with the requisite brand reputation to make a vehicle perceived as premium might seem easy in theory, but the demanding Indian consumer has made many a company bite the dust when it comes to getting this combination right.</p>

<p>Maruti Suzuki knows this all too well. Having established complete dominance in the mass market segments, over the years the company has tried numerous times to break into the premium segment – but with little success. And it’s not as if the products were lacking. The Kizashi and Grand Vitara, for instance, were both very capable products, but getting the consumer to believe that the Maruti Suzuki brand can be premium is something that has eluded them till now.</p>

<p>However, the latest premium offering from Maruti, the S-Cross, has many things in its favour – the biggest being that customers worldwide are very keen on crossovers and SUVs at the moment. And the Indian consumer is no different in this regard – something that’s been demonstrated by the massive increase in sales and consumer interest in this segment.</p>

<p>The styling of the S-Cross is going to be a polarising factor. Some thought it looked fairly purposeful, but, honestly, to me it didn’t seem like an SUV. It simply doesn’t have the aggression and stance to be qualified as one, so it’s a good thing that Maruti is referring to it as a crossover. But, while the S-Cross not a bad design, it looks more like a raised and elongated hatchback rather than a pure crossover. And, for many customers in this segment, that might be a turnoff as it doesn’t have the kind of road presence people have come to expect from SUVs – or, more appropriately, ‘quasi’ SUVs.</p>

<p>The interiors of the S-Cross are quite promising though. It’s a roomy car, with a lot of space available in both the front and rear rows, and a fairly large boot. Of course, as is the norm today, the S-Cross shares a large number of parts with other products from the Maruti Suzuki range – such as the touchscreen multimedia system, the climate control system, and other items. And this is no bad thing, as all these components are tried, tested, and they function quite well. However, the touch and feel of the interior is an aspect that Maruti needs to work on. The competition has seriously upped the game in this regard – especially when it comes to plastics and other surfaces. And, while the interiors of the S-Cross feel quite good, the overall impression is that there’s still some room for improvement.</p>

<p>The single biggest novelty in the S-Cross, though, is the debut of the 1.6-litre diesel engine. Belonging to the same engine family as the Fiat 1.3-litre diesel engine that we’re very familiar with, the bigger engine is fitted with a variable geometry turbocharger that enables it to produce 118bhp and 320Nm of torque. The other engine option on the S-Cross will be the ubiquitous 1.3-litre diesel, along with a five-speed manual gearbox – whereas the 1.6 gets a six-speed manual. And despite demand rising, albeit slowly, the S-Cross will not be offered with an automatic transmission or all-wheel drive – with front-wheel drive being the only option.</p>

<p>As we tackled early morning Mumbai traffic and headed towards the highway, the S-Cross felt quite nimble and handled well. The suspension is well tuned and quite comfortable. However, on bad roads, the ride can get quite choppy – especially at the rear. But the car feels very stable at high speed, and the standard disc brakes at all four corners (with ABS) work very well. Also helping the handling are wide 205-section tyres fitted on to 16-inch wheels. The 1.6-litre engine is quite refined and has low NVH levels, but below 1,700rpm it has quite a bit of turbo lag – so driving it in urban conditions is going to be slightly tricky. On the other hand, beyond 1,700rpm, the engine revs very quickly and delivers fantastic mid and top-end power. And while it can be revved to 4,500rpm, it starts to make quite a racket over 3,500rpm, which discourages you from redlining it. The engine works best in the 2,000-4,000rpm range, which is good enough for everyday use. The six-speed gearbox is quite nice to operate, offering crisp shifts with very well defined shift gates. With that said, given the premium positioning of the S-Cross, Maruti Suzuki should have at least offered an automatic transmission option on the top-end model.</p>

<p>The other interesting aspect is the impressive level of standard equipment available. The top-end version we drove featured climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation and Bluetooth, cruise control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 16-inch alloy wheels, and loads of other features. It clearly shows Maruti’s seriousness towards targeting customers looking at premium segment products, in which high equipment levels are a given.</p>

<p>The other, and more important aspect, from the point of view of both the manufacturer and the potential customer is the announcement of a new range of Maruti Suzuki dealerships. Named Nexa, these new dealerships have been specifically conceptualised and designed to appeal to a completely new set of customers. These outlets aim to bring a luxurious environment and superior buying experience to the Maruti Suzuki buyer. Of course, these dealerships will focus exclusively on selling Maruti’s premium product range – which will start out with the S-Cross and Ciaz sedan.</p>

<p>So, to conquer a segment that has remained elusive, Maruti is leaving no stone unturned with a brand new product, a new range of dealerships and a clear focus on taking the brand upmarket. Overall, the S-Cross is a refined machine, which is quite nice to drive and roomy too – making it a good, practical car for everyday use, as long as you don’t think of it as an SUV!</p>

<p>The real test will be how the Indian customer responds to the S-Cross within a crowded market of crossovers – and, more importantly, to the experience of a new range of dealerships. The strategy folks at Maruti are throwing everything, including the kitchen sink, at the problem. But this is a threshold that will take the brand some time to cross, as there are years of conditioning to overcome. The question is: will Maruti Suzuki have the patience to stay the course?</p>
