Porsche Macan Highlights
With the Macan, Porsche have been able to prove that a crossover can have sports car-like handling characteristics. The 2016 Porsche Macan is one among the best compact luxury SUVs in India, and is given credit for its sporty handling, reliability and posh cabin. The brand also claims that it is the "sports car of the SUV segment". Compared to its rivals, it is rather small, but is also fast and a hoot to drive. The all-wheel-drive system ensures there's a lot of grip on offer, and the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission makes it a very relaxed car to drive. What the Macan is sure to offer its buyers are high-end quality and an up-market image.
There's no denying the fact the Macan looks like a baby Cayenne. It is apparent from up-front, with those lozenge-shaped headlamps and the wide, sloping bonnet. The claw-like vents on the bumper set it apart from the Cayenne. Along the side, the 18-inch wheels look sporty; you can upgrade to 21-inchers as well. There isn't much to talk about when it comes to the side profile, apart from the dual-tone wing mirrors and the black panels on the lower half of the doors. At the rear, it gets a rounded tail gate and sports snazzy-looking, slim tail lamps. Also note the dual rectangular exhausts.
The Porsche Macan variants are as follows: 2L, Turbo and Turbo Performance. Features include multifunction steering with paddle-shifters, tyre pressure monitoring, three-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlamps, Porsche's Communication Management system that includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management, Porsche Car Connect, Apple CarPlay and 21-inch wheels. On the safety front, it is equipped with 8 airbags, traction control and a park assist function for the front and rear.
The layout inside the cabin is typical Porsche fare. The well-built, solid dashboard's centre console has an array of buttons with an individual switch for every feature. The touchscreen and navigation system come as standard, and additional options are sure to cost you a lot. The Sport Chrono package with launch control and a panoramic sunroof are among the host of goodies on offer. And then there's the front passenger seat with manual adjustment; you can also opt for Comfort Memory Seats. Up-front, the seats provide good comfort and support, while space at the rear is just about alright.
Engine Specifications & Performance
The Porsche Macan is powered by two engine options: a 2.0-litre, turbo petrol engine that produces 248bhp and 370Nm of torque, and a 3.6-litre, turbo-petrol engine that produces 400bhp and 550Nm of torque. Both engines are paired to a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox. We drove the smaller engine of the two. The Macan feels rather quick and energetic. It builds pace quickly, and has a strong mid-range. The engine pulls well and sounds quite sporty too. The PDK gearbox is super quick, and the driver can take control manually via the paddle-shifters. In terms of handling, the Macan turns in with precision. Thanks to the all-wheel-drive setup, there's a lot of grip on offer and the adjustable dampers help in keeping the Macan composed for the most part. Ride quality is good too, with bumps being absorbed without any fuss. Even the ride height can be increased by 40mm, in case of some rather huge bumps.
The Porsche Macan's ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 13.6kmpl for the 2.0-litre turbo petrol model and 13.2kmpl for the 3.6-litre turbo petrol model.
