<p>Ever since Renault launched the Duster in 2012 in India, it’s been a runaway success. But in the last couple of years, it has fallen behind in the pecking order. During this time, the French car manufacturer introduced a 4x4 version, AMT trim and has given the Duster a much-needed facelift, but unfortunately, this didn’t revive its fortunes. Therefore, Renault is working profusely on the next-generation Duster, which will make its debut next year. Good news is that you don’t have to wait for next year to see how the new Duster looks like as our magazine partners, Quattroruote, caught the prototype going testing rounds in Spain.</p>

<p>Even though the test mule is heavily cladded, the design of the 2018 Duster is more of an evolution rather than a revolution. The new Duster will have a prominent bumper design, apart from redesigned headlamps, which are now rectangular in shape. From whatever one can gather from the heavy camouflage, the tail lamps continue to be about the same size as the outgoing model, which is slightly disappointing as they are too small for an SUV.</p>

<p>This second-generation SUV will be bigger and wider than the current one thanks to the new CMF-B platform, which basicaly is an extended platform of the Kwid’s CMF-A. The new platform will also be lighter than the outgoing model. This new modular platform is also jointly developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which is specifically for bigger vehicles. Renault is expected to launch both a 5-seater and 5+2-seater Duster</p>

<p>New powertrain options will be offered, including a modern four-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine that generates 125bhp. But in India, Renault will retain the current engine options — 104bhp 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel in two trims 84bhp and 108bhp. The Duster will be available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive and be mated to an automatic and manual gearbox. As mentioned earlier, the new Duster will make its debut in India next year, but we expect the new Nissan Terrano not too far behind either.</p>

2018 Renault Duster spied for the first time

Ever since Renault launched the Duster in 2012 in India, it’s been a runaway success. But in the last couple of years, it has fallen behind in the pecking order. During this time, the French car manufacturer introduced a 4x4 version.

<p><strong>Base variant without airbag scored 0 stars in the crash test while the variant with driver side airbag&nbsp;scored three stars</strong></p>

<p>Global NCAP crash tested the latest iteration of the Renault Duster and the results have been somewhat dismal, at least for the most part. The program tested the base variant of the India-made Duster and it received zero stars for adult occupant safety. The Duster scored two stars in child occupant safety thanks to marginally better protection.</p>

<p>The report from Global NCAP says, “The protection offered to the driver's head was poor and for this reason, the star capping was applied. Driver’s and passenger’s chest protection was marginal. The front passengers’ knees could impact with dangerous structures in the dashboard lie the Tran fascia tube. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding any further loadings.” As far as child occupants are concerned, the seat could not hold the 3-year-old children into the seat on impact as well as it should.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Global NCAP also tested a variant with a driver-side airbag. The results of this test were relatively satisfactory with the car scoring three-stars for adult occupant safety. Despite the addition of airbags, the protection to the chest of the driver was weak but protection to the head was adequate. Dangerous structures of the dashboard could have a have a heavy impact on the passenger’s knees in the event of a crash. However, protection to the passenger’s head and chest were just marginal. &nbsp;Result for child occupant safety remained unchanged.</p>

<p>The Renault Duster isn’t the first Indian car to score zero in the Global NCAP Crash tests. Last year, the program put the Chevrolet Enjoy, Tata Zest, Hyundai Eon, Maruti Suzuki Eeco and Celerio, Mahindra Scorpio, <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/2015-renault-kwid-first-drive-review/">Renault Kwid</a> and a few other India-made cars to test. All of these cars’ base variants, without airbags, received zero stars in the crash test results.</p>

<p>Renault has updated the Duster petrol range in India with a new downsized engine and a CVT automatic gearbox. In addition to the mechanical upgrades, Renault has introduced a couple of new features as well as some subtle cosmetic updates to the vehicle. The refreshed Renault Duster petrol range carries a price tag ranging between Rs 8.49 lakh and Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).</p>

<p>The main highlight of the updated Duster petrol is its new 1.5-litre petrol engine that replaces the old model’s 1.6-litre unit. Although it’s a smaller engine, the power output in the new model is up - it develops 104.5bhp against 102bhp. Peak torque, however, is down by 6Nm to 142Nm. Other than that, the petrol motor is now mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as opposed to a 5-speed gearbox in the previous model. Most importantly, though, you can now opt for a CVT automatic gearbox with the petrol engine, which wasn’t the case before. Drive goes to front wheels as default and four-wheel drive is not offered with petrol models.</p>

<p>The new Duster petrol is available in three variants – RXE, RXL for the manual version and RXS trim for CVT automatic. The top-end RXZ is only offered with the diesel versions. As for cosmetic updates, there aren’t any significant revisions to speak of, but the CVT variant gets a couple of differentiating bits such as a shiny black grill, new dual-tone front bumper, side decals, tailgate decal, black door sills and 16-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin layout is unchanged, albeit there’s new seat fabric. The CVT variant gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system.</p>

<p>On the safety front, all the petrol variants come fitted standard with ABS, EBD with brake assist and driver airbag. The CVT variant adds a front passenger airbag, ESP and hill start assist to the list.</p>

<p>The Renault Duster petrol will mainly compete against the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Ford EcoSport. Both its rivals were offered with a petrol automatic from the get go, meaning the Renault Duster had been losing out on that front for quite a while now. The addition of a CVT variant will certainly bring in new customers for the brand.</p>
