The Tata Sierra is back! One of India’s most iconic nameplates has returned in an all-new avatar, and Aryan gives you a detailed walkaround straight from the launch floor.

<p>The hatchback segment in India isn’t what it used to be. These days, all the action is happening in the SUV and even MPV segments (see our cover). So, it’s a rare treat when we get to review a new hatchback. And it’s even more exciting when that hatchback comes with a diesel engine.</p>

<p>I spent a day with both the diesel and CNG versions of the recently launched Tata Altroz facelift. The new model comes with some tweaks while retaining some of the standout qualities of the outgoing version.</p>

<p>So, how much better is the new Altroz, and how does it stack up against rivals in the same price bracket? Time to find out.</p>

<h2>Tata Altroz Facelift Exterior Updates</h2>

<p>The dimensions of the Altroz remain unchanged, but the styling has received a notable update. There’s a clear emphasis on blacked-out elements, visible on the front end and the newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels. The LED headlamps now sport a sharper, more modern design, enhancing the overall look.</p><p>

    </p><p>Further adding to the contemporary appeal are the front flush door handles and connected tail lamps. While I wasn’t particularly taken with the design when I first saw the photos, I have to admit it looks significantly better in person. This is yet another attractively styled offering from Tata – something that’s become the norm of late. That said, I’d still consider swapping out the black alloys. They currently give off a bit too much of an EV vibe for my liking.</p>







<h2>Tata Altroz Facelift Interior Features &amp; Updates</h2>

<p>The dashboard has been redesigned and looks rather impressive. It houses a 10.25-inch touchscreen that was free of any lag during our time with the hatch. This unit supports wireless smartphone connectivity and includes a 65W USB-C port at the front, with another provided for the second row – a thoughtful addition that laptop users will certainly appreciate.</p><p>

    </p><p>Tata has also introduced their illuminated, two-spoke steering wheel into the mix. The AC controls have been moved to a touch panel, which also houses buttons for switching to CNG mode and for activating the 360-degree camera. It’s great to see Tata offering a surround-view camera – the feed quality is decent – though the obstacle detection system does need some calibration. During our test, even when reversing on a flat, empty tarmac, the system repeatedly flagged non-existent obstacles and triggered warning alerts. An electronic sunroof and a larger ambient light strip further add to the interior appeal.</p>







<p>While you still get fabric seats, they provide excellent support and cushioning, particularly due to the new extensions at the base that offer better under-thigh support. This feature is also present in the rear seats. However, I do feel Tata missed a trick by not including powered &amp; ventilated front seats in this update.</p><p>

    </p><p>The second-row space is adequate, though knee room may feel just about enough for taller passengers. One surprising omission is the absence of a weight sensor on the rear bench. As a result, the seatbelt warning system requires the rear seat belts to be buckled even when no one is seated at the back – otherwise, the alarm keeps beeping.</p>







<h2>Tata Altroz Diesel &amp; CNG Driving Review</h2>

<p>The new Altroz is available with a choice between a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, both offering the same outputs as before. The petrol variant is also offered with a CNG option, although the more powerful turbo-petrol version is yet to be introduced.</p><p>

<p>Notably, the Altroz remains the only hatchback to offer a diesel powertrain – a welcome change, especially given how punchy this motor is. It cruises effortlessly at highway speeds; however, at higher revs, engine noise and vibrations do become apparent. Both petrol and diesel engines suffer from a lack of low-end pulling power, which is noticeable in everyday driving.</p>

<p>The petrol engine is now available with a 5-speed AMT, while the CNG and diesel variants are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. While the gear shifts are generally easy, the throws are long, and there’s an occasional grinding sound mid-shifts. So, while the engine itself is reasonably competent, there haven’t been any notable improvements in terms of how it behaves.</p><p>

<p>What does stand out, however, is the ride quality. Tata continues to deliver some of the best suspension setups in the business – the Altroz handles bumps with impressive composure while still offering good grip around faster corners. It may not be an outright driver’s car, but it comes remarkably close.</p>

<h2>Tata Altroz Facelift Price &amp; Verdict</h2>

<p>The new Altroz remains a well-rounded package – just as it always was. The refreshed styling and updated features make an even stronger case for it in today’s market. Even the introductory starting price of ₹ 6.89 lakh (ex-showroom) is quite competitive.</p>

<p>That said, the higher trims do feel a bit pricey and could have offered a few more features to justify the premium. If you’re looking for a diesel hatchback, the Altroz stands as your default choice. It’s not often you see a new hatchback in 2025, let alone one powered by diesel. But Tata has refreshed the Altroz, and we have driven both the diesel and CNG versions to see if it still delivers.

<p>Tata Sierra is set to make a return with its official launch on 25 November 2025, bringing back a name many Indian buyers remember. Tata Motors will introduce the SUV in both internal combustion and electric versions to reach a wide customer base. The new Sierra will compete in the compact SUV segment against the<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta/"> Hyundai Creta</a>, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/kia/seltos/">Kia Seltos </a>and <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/maruti-suzuki/grand-vitara/">Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara</a>. This launch helps Tata connect its heritage with its modern mobility plans. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine produces 168bhp and 280Nm, while the 1.5-litre diesel produces 120bhp and 260Nm. Both engines will come with manual and automatic gearbox choices. The electric variant will join soon after and support Tata’s wider EV plans in the domestic market.</p><p>Prices for the new Sierra are expected to start at around Rs 15 lakh and go up to around Rs 25 lakh for the higher variants. The Tata Harrier EV was one of the most anticipated contenders in this year’s track day lineup. It scored impressively in categories that matter most for a family SUV – 4/5 for comfort and space, 4/5 for design, and that to, at a really good value. It looks and feels a class above, and the all-wheel-drive system – called ‘quad-wheel drive’ by Tata – adds a promise of go-anywhere capability to this luxurious and tech-laden SUV. <p>Performance, however, is where things become complicated. You see, on paper, the QWD version is a beast, with 504Nm of torque and a claimed 0 – 100 km/h sprint time of 6.3 seconds. Off the line, its acceleration is thrilling and intoxicating, while the AWD system ensures that power is delivered cleanly. But on the track, all this disappeared like smoke. It clocked a lap time of 1:14.1 – one of the slowest on the list. The reason? Well, it’s simple – the weight.</p>

<p>The Harrier EV is a big, heavy SUV, and you feel every kilogram the moment you push it hard. On the track, its bulk becomes apparent, and it doesn’t feel confident or composed. Moreover, its soft brakes, vague steering, and top-heavy feel make things difficult around tight corners. The Harrier struggles to use all that power to its advantage, for the chassis simply can’t keep up under stress – it tends to get overwhelmed by the weight. The Harrier EV’s low scores for performance and handling reflect this reality. Its premium cabin and phenomenal ride quality make it a fantastic place to be in for long journeys. It impressed the jury with its ambition and luxury, but it’s not a car to chase apexes in – it’s more suited for those who like to cruise on the highway in absolute comfort.

    If you want to assess a person’s true character, watch how they behave when they’re angry. And if you want to test a vehicle’s engineering credentials, push it to its absolute limits on the track. Believe it or not, it’s only when you drive a machine at the edge of adhesion that its true capabilities, underlying engineering, and limitations are laid bare. And that’s precisely why we took the three seemingly humble family e-SUVs - the Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra XEV 9e, and Tata Harrier.EV - for a day out on the track. Not to see if they can scorch the racetrack with blistering lap times, but to explore, or rather expose, their dynamic capabilities.</p><p>For this test, we used the shorter 2.1km layout of the BIC, which includes the racetrack’s fast-flowing and technical sections. The job was simple - push these three SUVs to achieve their fastest lap times and see how composed each one feels without falling apart!</p><div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

<h2>Hyundai Creta EV: The Quiet Evolution</h2>

<p>Of the three contenders here, the Creta is by far the most unassuming EV. Instead of wanting to look otherworldly, it sticks to the tried-and-tested formula of the ICE Creta and is all but indistinguishable from its petrol and diesel siblings. Coming to the technical details, the Creta EV isn’t built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform like the Kona or Ioniq 5. It’s basically your regular Creta that has been re-engineered under the skin to house electric architecture. Consequently, its dimensions are identical to those of the ICE version.</p><div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

    <p>The only real difference lies in the weight - the Creta EV is around 250 - 300kgs heavier than the diesel Creta (1,265kgs), thanks to a big battery pack mounted in the floor. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, for it results in a lower centre of gravity, which offers it an edge on the racetrack.</p>







<p>Despite being the least powerful (169bhp/255Nm) of the bunch, with the slowest 0 - 100km/h time of 7.9 seconds, the Creta EV posted the fastest lap time of the trio here. Surprising? Absolutely, but also true. <p>It’s the same story in the dynamics department. Despite having the least impressive components on its spec sheet - standard dampers, torsion-beam rear axle, and 17-inch wheels - the Creta EV surprisingly offers a well-balanced handling experience. The steering is progressive and feels the most precise and direct of the three during quick direction changes. The body movements are well contained, with minimal body roll, all thanks to its low and heavy build.</p><p>Sure, the stock tyres do plead for mercy when pushed to the limit of adhesion, but even then, the grip levels are surprisingly impressive. The electronics are the most refined of the trio, never imposing harshly when you hustle the car around corners. To say that the Creta EV exceeded our expectations on the track wouldn’t be an exaggeration.</p>







<h2>Mahindra XEV 9e: Space-age Ballistic</h2>

<p>Mahindra’s new-age EV twins - the BE.6 and XEV 9e - have been making waves ever since they entered the Indian market. While both offerings are flying off the shelves, it’s the XEV that’s a more sensible choice for families, thanks to its more practical approach.</p><div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

<p>First things first, unlike the Creta EV or Harrier.EV, the XEV is a ‘born electric’ SUV, which basically means it’s built on a dedicated EV platform (INGLO) rather than a modified ICE platform. The XEV is easily the sportiest-looking SUV here, thanks to its spaceship-inspired coupe design, full of sharp creases and sleek angles. And it’s not just the outer appearance - it has equally impressive sporty credentials underneath.</p><p>At 4,789mm long with a 2,775mm wheelbase, it’s the longest EV here. It gets independent suspension all around, featuring a multi-link rear setup and semi-active dampers. The XEV is available with two battery pack options - 59kWh and 79kWh. We tested the version with the bigger battery pack, with the motor rated at 282bhp and 380Nm. Unlike the Creta EV, the XEV is driven by the rear wheels. Mahindra claims a 0 - 100km/h time of 6.8 seconds. On paper, the XEV seems to have a clear advantage over the Creta EV, and yet, it turned out to be slightly slower. Why?</p>







<p>Well, there isn’t a single reason. First and foremost is weight - at nearly 2,200kgs, the XEV weighs around 700kgs more than the Creta EV. When driving fast, you can feel its extra mass eat up half its firepower. That said, its acceleration is still brisk and seamless, although it doesn’t feel blisteringly quick as you’d expect from an EV with nearly 300 horses under its hood. <p>Around corners, the XEV’s rear bias and impeccable chassis balance shine through. The handling is taut, and the steering is precise. However, it’s not as wieldy as the Creta. Again, that comes down to its weight and relatively higher centre of gravity. In the XEV, you also feel that its electronics and tyres are fighting harder with the laws of physics to keep the SUV on line. What’s more, the power delivery to the wheels is directly linked to the steering angle - the ESC won’t let the motor unleash its full fury unless the front wheels are pointed straight. So, when you come out of a corner, there’s a bit of waiting before the XEV can slingshot out.</p><div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

    <p>You can take a wider line and use the full width of the track (including kerbs) to cut lap times marginally. And while you’re at it, the BIC’s wide kerbs let you appreciate the supple and absorbent nature of its suspension, which is definitely superior to the Creta’s setup over rough surfaces.</p>







<h2>Tata Harrier.EV: The Big EV Bruiser</h2>

<p>The Harrier.EV isn’t built completely from the ground up like the XEV 9e, although it’s not derived entirely from an ICE version either, like the Creta EV. Instead, its architecture is a bit of a hybrid, featuring the top shell of the ICE Harrier paired with a completely new floor design to house the electric running gear. In terms of length and wheelbase, it’s slightly smaller than the XEV, but it’s substantially wider and taller. And like the Mahindra, it runs independent suspension all around, with frequency-dependent damping (FDD) to keep things composed.</p><div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

<p>Now, if you compare the three contenders purely based on their spec sheets, the Harrier.EV comes out on top without a shadow of a doubt. It’s not just the most powerful EV of the bunch, but it also features an AWD setup. But does it dominate the other two when the rubber hits the track?</p>

<p>Let’s look at the actual numbers. The Harrier.EV on test here is the top-of-the-line QWD (quad wheel drive) version, featuring a 75kWh battery pack. It has two motors - an induction unit at the front rated at 156bhp and a PMS motor at the rear rated at 235bhp. The combined system output stands at 309bhp, with a peak torque of 504Nm. Tata claims it can clock 0 - 100km/h in 6.3 seconds, which is believable given the figures.</p><p>In terms of outright performance and acceleration, the Harrier feels the most urgent. And since it’s the tallest and heaviest EV of the bunch - the QWD variant tips the scales at over 2,300kgs - it’s subjected to higher g-forces, or at least that’s how it feels. Thanks to its AWD system, it’s got superb traction and launches off the line in the most sure-footed manner.</p><div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

<p>However, life gets troubling for the Harrier.EV the moment you hit a corner, especially at racetrack speeds. Like the Mahindra, this Tata is a heavy bruiser, and given its high centre of gravity and weight, pushing it to the limits immediately turns into a wrestling match with the laws of motion. Around the fast and flowing corners of the short loop of the BIC, the Harrier.EV struggled to put its power down neatly. It tends to understeer as soon as you step on the A-pedal mid-corner, while the electronics frantically try to shuffle power between all four wheels.</p>

<p>Part of the blame also lay with the tyres of our test car, as they weren’t in good nick. However, given the mass and the stupendous acceleration forces these tyres have to deal with, it’s hardly surprising.</p>

<p>The Harrier.EV’s electronics, too, feel the most intrusive, cutting power abruptly and making it difficult to get into a rhythm when doing back-to-back laps. Again, more than anything, it’s a direct fight with physics. The Harrier.EV has to deal with so much weight and inertia that it’s impossible to get a clean and tidy lap time. What also doesn’t help is its rather vague steering - it doesn’t feel as consistent or progressive as the Creta’s or the XEV’s.</p>

<p>Although in comparison to the XEV, the electronics are a little more lenient and don’t sap the power completely at the slightest steering angle. When it comes to shedding speed, the Harrier.EV’s all-disc braking setup offers immense retardation force, although a slightly more progressive pedal feel would have been better.</p>

<p>All in all, all these inconsistencies resulted in the Harrier.EV posting the slowest lap time, despite being the most potent contender on paper.</p><p>

<p>As mentioned in the beginning, this test was purely meant to assess the dynamic capabilities of these three family SUVs, which means it’s not a usual comprehensive comparison where we talk about aspects like practicality, comfort, space, driving range, value-for-money, and so on. However, if there’s one thing this track test proved, it’s that spec sheets don’t always paint the actual picture. You see, the Creta EV may not have the biggest numbers or the most exotic hardware, but it feels the most cohesive and confidence-inspiring when pushed to the limit. On the other hand, the Mahindra XEV 9e impresses with its dedicated new-age EV platform, but its sheer mass and overly cautious electronics rob it of some of the thrill it promises. <p>The Kia Carens Clavis EV and Tata Harrier EV represent two distinctly different approaches to electric mobility in India. The Carens Clavis, the country’s first indigenously manufactured 7-seater electric MPV, is priced from Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and offers up to 490 km of range from a 51.4kWh battery. It delivers 169bhp and 255Nm of torque, achieving 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds. In contrast, the Tata Harrier EV, starting at Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom), is a premium 5-seater SUV available with 65kWh and 75kWh battery options, delivering a claimed range of up to 627 km. It also offers an optional dual-motor AWD setup producing 504Nm, with a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.3 seconds. Kia Carens Clavis EV vs Tata Harrier EV Spec Comparison: What's Different?

This comparison between the Kia Carens Clavis EV and Tata Harrier EV explores how they differ in specs, performance, and everyday usability.

<p><em>This is the moment of truth for Tata Motors, as a lot rides on the Tata Bolt’s success. Will it hit a homerun or will it suffer stage fright? We head to Udaipur to do our Tata Bolt and find out...</em></p>

<p>A lot has been said about Tata Motors losing market share at a steady pace. Many have even started writing obituaries, but all this is premature because this Indian automobile manufacturer is not sitting idle. It’s an open secret that the company is trying really hard to change its image, and this led to the entry of the Zest. To some extent, this sedan has honestly tried to iron out the company’s perennial problems of build quality, fit-and-finish, and refinement. This was the first chapter of change for Tata, but the acid test remains how the Tata Bolt will fair in the competitive hatchback segment.</p>

<p>Like in most segments, even in the compact car space, diesel variants outsell their petrol counterparts. But Tata has a different take on this, as the price difference between the two fuels is reducing. They believe this segment will be 60:40 in favour of petrol cars. Based on this, we drove only the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol powered Tata Bolt recently in Udaipur. I guess we’ll have to wait a little while longer for the Tata Bolt diesel, and its automatic variant.</p>

<p>This 1.2-litre engine, meanwhile, is the same mill that powers its elder sibling, the Zest. It has identical output figures, and it uses the same 5-speed gearbox. But the slight, yet crucial, difference is that the Tata Bolt peaks at the 5,000rpm, while the Zest peaks at 4,000rpm. This may sound like technical mumbo-jumbo, but it makes all the difference once you step on the accelerator pedal – because that’s when you notice the sweet, linear power delivery. From the word go, the Tata Bolt has a more willing response, and lag is kept down to a minimum. Tata has also shortened the gear ratios to make the Tata Bolt more responsive at slow speeds.</p>

<p>The Tata Bolt is the first car in its segment to offer three drive modes – Eco, City and Sport. Basically, at the touch of a button, the ECU selects a different map for the engine – which alters the car’s performance. The default mode is City, which is ideal for urban driving conditions, as told by our Tata Bolt, as it provides adequate power while, at the same time, ensuring fuel efficiency. Eco mode is where all the juice evaporates though, and you feel like you’re in the middle of a mileage run. Since the response is quite anaemic in Eco, most Tata Bolt owners will be happier in City mode. But the Sport mode is where the Tata Bolt springs to life, and the rpm needle makes an honest lunge towards the redline. Take the Tata Bolt on an incline, and you’ll certainly notice the difference – even Usain (yes, Tata Bolt) would be momentarily proud.</p>

<p>At a glance, the Tata Bolt looks a lot like its predecessor – the Vista. For a company that wants to change its image, this is not a good sign! It would also be unfair to say that there aren’t any changes, as the new swept back and angular headlamps do stand out. The headlights are also blacked out, and provide a very contemporary feel. The new smiley face front grille or, as Tata designers call it, the ‘Humanity’ line tries to give the Tata Bolt a fresh look. The bonnet flexes its muscles as well, with a slight bulge in the centre.</p>

<p>Step inside, and you’re welcomed by an all-black dashboard layout, which, in my opinion, is better than the Vista’s dual-tone interiors. The layout is identical to the Zest, and so it comes with a touch-screen infotainment system by Harman, smart phone based navigation maps from MapMyIndia, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and Aux ports. The plastic quality is an improvement (and I hate to say this…) for a Tata product. When compared with the competition, quality is still below par. It doesn’t give you that solid feel, which customers now expect.</p>

<p>The seating position, as felt by us during our&nbsp;Tata Bolt, is spot-on. Tata has worked overtime to ensure that there’s plenty of side bolstering, but I would have preferred a little more lower back support. The cabin is very spacious, like all Tata cars, and it has substantial knee room for rear passengers as well.</p>

<p>On the road during our Tata Bolt, the independent McPherson Struts in front, and the semi-independent twist beam at the rear worked perfectly, and they ensured that the ride quality is comfortable in city conditions. No pothole or a ditch will sneak up on you, and give you a rude awakening. The ride is plush, but on flat smooth tarmac it feels slightly soft. The steering feels just right – not too heavy – making the Tata Bolt effortless to drive in rush hour traffic. It also makes parking a breeze, although we would have liked parking sensors to ease our parking woes.</p>

<p>According to our Tata Bolt, the Tata Bolt’s suspension is stiffer than the Zest for better handling. We did put the Tata Bolt to the test through the sweeping curves we encountered around Udaipur, and this hatchback stayed planted. But, at the same time, it did feel a little nervous when pushing through curves at high speed.</p>

<p>All said and done, the 1.2-litre Revotron engine is quite refined and, really, is ideal for urban driving conditions. The drive modes may come across as a gimmick, but they really do work to change the Bolt’s mood from mellow to mildly aggressive. The company still needs to work on cabin quality, and more radical looks would have been welcome. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see that Tata is clearly taking steps in the right direction – but bigger leaps will be required to really give its rivals sleepless nights.</p>
