BMW Motorrad unveils M Endurance chain for S 1000 RR & S 1000 XR

BMW Motorrad has introduced a new 'M endurance Chain', which claims to offer the same maintenance-free experience as BMW Motorrad's Shaft Drive. Thanks to a tetrahedrally amorphous-Carbon (ta-C) coating, it eliminates the requirements of any wet lubrication, cleaning and chain re-tensioning.

BMW M Endurance Chain

BMW Motorrad claims the M Endurance chain is 'maintenance-free', with no requirement of any additional lubrication or re-tensioning.

After developing the high-tech Shaft Drive mechanism (as we know it) for the early R32, BMW Motorrad has now introduced the 'M endurance Chain' which claims to offer the same maintenance-free experience as BMW Motorrad's Shaft Drive.

The new M Endurance chain follows the same design of the previous X-ring chains, where the X-ring encloses the rollers & pins that have a permanent lubricant filling between them. However, the M Endurance chain comes with rollers that are coated with additional 'tetrahedrally amorphous-Carbon' (ta-C), better known as industrial diamond. With respect to hardness & durability, the ta-C coating can be placed between Diamond-Like Coating (DLC) and pure diamond.

The benefit? The ta-C coating offers an ultra-smooth surface with extreme hardness & resistance, therefore, it does not wear off and reduces the coefficient of friction significantly. Thanks to this, the ta-C coated rollers of the M Endurance chain offer maintenance comfort comparable to that of a shaft drive motorcycle. This eliminates the requirements of any external wet lubrication, cleaning and chain re-tensioning.

BMW Motorrad M Endurance Chain

BMW Motorrad has started producing the M Endurance chain for two of its four-cylinder models – S 1000 RR & the S 1000 XR. It's available as an accessory or directly from the factory as an optional extra. It will be introduced to more models in the months to come.
