In January, there was a substantial surge in two-wheeler sales, with numerous renowned brands experiencing notable growth. As other manufacturers endeavour to exceed their sales figures from the previous year, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) and Hero MotoCorp are engaged in fierce competition for the leading positions in the country's automotive market. Let's delve into the top five two-wheeler brands in terms of domestic sales in January 2024, along with their year-on-year (YoY) growth.

Hero MotoCorp

Hero MotoCorp had a remarkable start to the year as it secured its first podium at the Dakar Rally – an unprecedented feat for an Indian team. Furthermore, the Indian manufacturer continues to lead the two-wheeler market in India, recording sales of 4,20,934 units in January with a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 20.4 per cent.

The new Mavrick 440 marks the company's entry into the premium motorcycle market. This Hero bike, based on the Harley-Davidson X440, is offered in three variants: base, mid, and top, with a starting price of Rs 1.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Built on a trellis steel frame, the bike shares its foundation with the Harley Davidson X440.

Powering the Mavrick 440 is a single-cylinder, 440cc oil-cooled engine featuring a six-speed transmission and slip-and-assist clutch. While the engine has been slightly tuned, it produces 27bhp at 6,000rpm and 36Nm at 4,000rpm – 2Nm lower than that of the X440.

The Activa remains HMSI's best-selling model, yet the Japanese bikemaker fell short of surpassing Hero MotoCorp to claim the top spot in the country's two-wheeler market. However, the firm experienced a substantial year-on-year (YoY) increase of 37.5 per cent in domestic sales for January this year, selling 3.83 lakh units, as compared to 2.78 lakh units in January 2023.

TVS Motor Company

Last month, TVS Motor Company secured the third spot in the Indian market with sales of 2.68 lakh units, marking a year-on-year (YoY) sales gain of 23.9 per cent. In comparison, TVS sold 2.16 lakh units in the same period last year. The Hosur-based company has maintained its position as the third-largest market player in India due to its diverse range of offerings across various sectors.

Bajaj Auto

Bajaj Pulsar N250

Following TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto secured the fourth spot on the list. In January 2024, the company recorded sales of 1.93 lakh units domestically, reflecting a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 35.8 per cent. Comparatively, Bajaj delivered 1.42 lakh units in the same period last year. The Pulsar line retains its status as the automaker's best-selling product in India, while several other models have also enjoyed success in the global market.

Suzuki Motorcycle India

Suzuki India, the renowned Japanese manufacturer of motorcycles, secured the fifth position among the top five brands in terms of two-wheeler sales last month. It dispatched 80,511 units in January this year as opposed to 66,209 units sold in January last year. The company reported a YoY rise of 21.6 per cent in January 2024.
