BMW 3 Series buyers in India & across the globe will be content with their choice as the sports sedan's latest avatar has achieved a perfect five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

BMW's best-selling sedan, now in its 7th generation, has come out of its Euro NCAP safety assessment with flying colours. The flying colours here translate into a perfect five-star safety rating for the sports sedan. For those not aware, the Euro NCAP's four main scoring categories consist of Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road Users & Safety Assist. The 2019 BMW 3 Series has achieved a rating of 97 per cent, 87 per cent, 87 per cent & 76 per cent in the four categories, respectively.

In the Adult Occupant tests, where the new 3 Series has earned the highest score (37.1 out of 38 points), the NCAP assessment report is all praises for its stability during a frontal offset crash. For occupants of all sizes, the 3 Series offers the same levels of protection to all critical body areas. The area where it can improve is chest protection during a frontal full-width crash.

In the Child Occupant category, the 3 Series scored 42.8 out of 49 points. While its child protection report does not highlight any problem areas, it has lost points mainly due to the lack of safety features which can be fitted or offered as standard for the front passenger & rear centre seats. The 3 Series also performed well in terms of the installation & accommodation of child safety restraints.

In the final two categories, Vulnerable Road Users (pedestrian safety) & Safety Assist, the 3 Series bagged 42 out of 48 points and 10 out 13 points, respectively. The NCAP report has praised BMW's 'Active Bonnet', which provides ample protection to a pedestrian under multiple impact scenarios. The area where the test results have been mixed though is pelvic protection. Other than that, the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems have also performed well, with collisions avoided or mitigated in all test scenarios.
