While the Coronavirus pandemic has severely affected the automotive industry, there are some exceptions. The all-new Hyundai Creta being one. It was launched just before the countrywide lockdown, and yet, it’s selling like hotcakes. According to Hyundai Motor India, the company has received 55,000 bookings for the SUV in just four months!

While that’s a good number, what’s really interesting to note here is the fact that a majority of Creta buyers are opting for diesel variants of the SUV. Over 60% of the bookings are made for the diesel Creta. Now that’s quite surprising, especially given the uncertainty over the future of diesel vehicles. Not to mention, the difference between the diesel and petrol variants of the Creta is significant, around Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh, and the diesel version also attracts higher taxation. However, it seems none of this matters to 60% of the Creta buyers.

Apart from garnering over half a lakh bookings, the Creta was also the best-selling SUV in the country in the month of May and June 2020. It’s without a doubt the most popular Hyundai model right now, as it’s the most enquired vehicle on the company’s 'Click to Buy' online sales platform – over 30% of the enquiries are for the Creta, while 76% of the vehicle's bookings are also done online.

The all-new Creta is available in three powertrain options – a 1.4-litre Kappa Turbo GDi petrol, which comes paired exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox; a 1.5-litre MPi naturally-aspirated petrol unit that’s offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed CVT automatic, and then, as we’ve just learned, there’s the most popular engine option of the lot, which is a 1.5-litre turbocharged U2 diesel unit that’s available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic. The Hyundai Creta is priced between Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 17.20 lakh (ex-showroom).
