Porsche Macan Electric Prototypes

Images of the first test mules of the upcoming electric Porsche Macan are out along with some details of the production-spec model.

In March last year, we informed our readers about Porsche's plans to develop an all-electric version of the Macan that could enter production by the end of 2022. As it turns out, we were spot on, as just a few days ago, Porsche revealed the images of the first physical prototypes of the electric Macan leaving the Porsche Development Center in Weissach for their on-road development testing. Alongside the highly camouflaged prototypes, Porsche has also revealed some preliminary details of what to expect from the final production model.

It's coming in 2023

Yes, despite the global delays caused by the pandemic, the electric Macan is still on course for a 2023 debut. Of course, it's still too early to provide a more accurate timeline at this point in time, but at least the model's arrival is confirmed now.

'The sportiest model in its segment'

These are the words of Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board, Research & Development, at Porsche AG. The electric Macan will be Porsche's first EV to be built on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that's based on Taycan's existing J1 platform. Therefore, it's no surprise that the Macan, like the Taycan, will also be powered by an 800V setup to offer the signature Porsche-E performance.

A completely new display & operating system

Folks at Porsche seem to be determined to give the electric Macan an unmistakable identity when compared to the compact SUV's current ICE-powered versions. Therefore, alongside an all-new platform and powertrain, the electric Macan will also get a completely new OS and display for a unique experience. The test mules can also be seen donning new headlamps with a Taycan-inspired light signature.

Electric and ICE

In news that may come as a relief to Porsche purists, the company has confirmed that the standard ICE-powered Macan will be updated this year. Reason? It will continue to be sold alongside the electric Macan, once the latter makes its commercial debut. So, expect a fairly long life span from all versions of the Macan.
