Ford unveils the India-spec Mustang GT; to be launched in second-quarter of 2016

The Ford Mustang is finally here, well… almost. The Mustang, or Ford’s “heart and soul” in the company’s speak, has been officially confirmed for the Indian market. Sales of the iconic pony car will commence from second quarter of 2016.

Ford unveiled the India-spec Mustang at an event today while also disclosing other details about the car. Like reported earlier, the Ford Mustang headed our way will be the GT variant of the car. The Mustang GT comes fitted with a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine in a true muscle car fashion. The V8 motor develops 420bhp of max power and 529Nm of peak torque. For the Indian market, the engine will come mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Power reserves from the engine will be channeled to rear wheels.

In its sixth generation, the current Ford Mustang became the first ever version in half a century to be offered with a right-hand drive configuration. The sixth-gen Ford Mustang also features a newly devised fully independent front and rear suspension setup. The Mustang GT comes with Selectable Drive Modes, allowing the driver to alter the car’s ride and handling characteristics in normal, snow/wet, sport and track conditions.

Since its inception in 1964, Ford has dispatched more than 9 million units of the Mustang across the world. In India, the Mustang is not expected to set the sales chart on fire since it’s more of a halo product. Given the heritage and pedigree of the Mustang as a brand though, it’s likely to sell in decent numbers. That will of course depend greatly on how Ford chooses to price it. And as we have been witnessing of late, Ford hardly puts a foot wrong in that regard!

The Ford Mustang does not have any direct rival in the country as yet. Since it’s expected to be priced between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 80 lakh, the likes of Audi TT and BMW Z4 will be its nearest rivals in India.
