Looks like June 2017 wasn’t a month that a majority of automakers will relish.

June 2017 was a rather slow month for the automotive industry with GST’s anticipation taking a huge toll on car sales. Manufacturers were busy pushing various schemes in the form of pre-GST benefits, but the sales are a clear proof that the customers were willing to wait for GST’s implementation before narrowing down on a car.

ModelUnits Sold
Maruti Suzuki Alto14,856
Hyundai Grand i1012,317
Maruti Suzuki Dzire12,049

Maruti Suzuki Swift9,902
Maruti Suzuki Baleno9,057
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza8,293
Hyundai Creta6,436
Maruti Suzuki Celerio6,375

There is absolutely no surprise that the list is dominated by only two brands - Maruti and Hyundai. The two manufacturers comprise of over 60 per cent cars that run on Indian roads. June 2017’s top 10 scorer list has seven cars from Maruti, and three from Hyundai.

The Maruti Alto retains its top spot on the list, however, even the consistent best-seller struggled to save itself from the GST impact. At 14,856 units, Alto’s sales number was over 8,000 units short of its preceding month’s.

The Grand i10 has a great month though, it came just below the Alto, whereas the Swift encountered a steep decline of roughly 7,000 units month-on-month. The All new Dzire is however, performing really well, and despite its steeply priced top variants, it has become the country’s best selling compact sedan, yet again.

Another trend that has been observed after quite a while is the i20 toppling the Baleno. Maruti’s premium hatchback has been edging out the i20 for some time now, but June 2017 saw the trend reverse.

With most cars benefitting from price cuts in the GST era, it is quite likely that customers who held back in June will resume their car buying process in July, thus compensating for June’s lacklustre sales.
