Mercedes-Benz has reintroduced diesel power to its G-Class lineup in India with the launch of the new G 450d, priced at Rs 2.9 crore (ex-showroom). Limited to 50 units, the diesel variant returns to the range after a brief gap, offering buyers an alternative to the petrol and all-electric options. The G 450d replaces the previous G 400d while sitting Rs 20 lakh below the G 580 EQ Technology. With this launch, Mercedes-Benz aims to expand its presence in the luxury SUV market by catering to customers seeking a durable and capable model with modern efficiency features.
Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said: 'The new G 450d underlines our commitment to offer diesel, petrol and electric powertrain for the first time in India to the G-Class, the longest running nameplate in the automotive industry. The G 450d featuring Mercedes-Benz’s powerful and efficient diesel engine, combines performance with efficiency, reiterating the sustained customer demand for a diesel powertrain in the G-Class.

'The G 450d ensures Mercedes-Benz now has a ‘G-Class’ for every customer requirement in India, further elevating practicality along with desirability and cult status of this iconic SUV.'
The G 450d continues the G-Class’s familiar design language, featuring a flat body, upright stance, and exposed door hinges. Updates include a new chrome grille, revised bumpers, and 20-inch AMG alloy wheels. Built on a body-on-frame platform, the SUV maintains its off-road credibility. Mercedes-Benz has retained the core styling elements that define the G-Class while adding minor updates to match the rest of the current lineup.

The cabin combines functionality and technology. It features dual 12.3-inch displays running the MBUX NTG7 infotainment system, Nappa leather upholstery, and ambient lighting. The 760-watt Burmester audio system with Dolby Atmos support adds to the overall driving experience. The SUV also includes Level 2 driver assistance functions such as active brake assist, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system, improving driving safety and convenience.
Under the bonnet, the G 450d is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The powertrain generates 361bhp and 750Nm of torque, with an added 20bhp from the hybrid assist. Power is transmitted through a 9-speed automatic gearbox and Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The SUV accelerates from 0–100km/h in 5.8 seconds, with the hybrid unit enhancing efficiency and power delivery.

The G 450d maintains the off-road standards expected from the G-Class. It includes three mechanical differential locks, 241 mm of ground clearance, and the ability to wade through 700 mm of water. With the launch, Mercedes-Benz India is also promoting its ‘G-Tribe Escapades’ driving programme, which will feature an India-to-Bhutan expedition in 2025. The G 450d strengthens the G-Class lineup by blending diesel-hybrid performance with traditional Mercedes-Benz engineering.
