Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview
Most of us know the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen well, for it has been around as one of the toughest SUVs since 1979. It has been a proven workhorse among the German military and Canadian army, and for the right reasons. The G-Class is also Mercedes' original SUV that is an icon for having been the longest-standing Mercedes-Benz vehicle to be produced till date. It combines an iconic design, posh interiors and unmatched off-road prowess. Going by the looks alone, this butch, go-anywhere, ladder-frame SUV is bound to pique the interest of anyone with ₹ 2 crores lying around. And the 2018 AMG G 63 is not only modern and brimming with the latest tech, but is also immensely usable. A part of the 2019 update, is an all-new 350d engine, which has significantly made the Mercedes-Benz G-Class price affordable to the masses.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class Exterior
It does take a while to spot the differences between the previous-generation model and 2018, third-generation one. Although it does look every bit a G-Wagen, there are a host of changes on the outside. Firstly, the wheelbase is longer, and the overall dimensions - like the width, length and height, have increased as well. Up-front, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class new model gets restyled bumpers for a modern look, the grille sports vertical chrome elements with the huge Mercedes-Benz logo on it, and the circular multi-beam headlamps have LED rings on the borders. There are also kick plates at the front and rear that get a matte-silver finish. From the sides, the G 63 remains more-or-less identical to the previous one, except for the nicely rounded edges and those lovely optional 22-inch wheels. The side-exit exhausts and push-button door handles look really cool. At the rear, it gets a tail-mounted spare wheel and redesigned LED tail lamps.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class Variants
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class variants are as follows: 350d and G 63 AMG. Features include a COMAND infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation with Bluetooth and USB functions, cooled and heated front seats, a sunroof, a Burmester audio system with 15 speakers, radar-guided cruise control and adaptive cruise control. On the safety front, it is equipped with blind spot assist, active brake assist, 360-degree parking camera, active lane assist, theft alarms, ABS, EBD, ESP, and 9 airbags.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class Interior
With the G 63, you'll have to use the side step to hop inside. You're seated really high, with great all-round visibility. The lush cabin includes lots of leather and carbon fibre bits, and the front seats get a massage function, while the upholstery comes with a red and black contrast. What also catches the eye, are the red seatbelts. Mounted on the dashboard is a pair of 12.3-inch screens with a fully digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, while the central console is loaded with a whole lot of buttons. The steering wheel looks familiar; it looks like the ones seen on their other cars. It features trackpads to customise the dials and gets audio controls as well. The seats at the rear are huge, well bolstered and can recline too. Even boot space is plenty for those who love road travel.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class Engine Specifications & Performance
The G 63 is powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that produces 576.7bhp and 850Nm of torque while the 350d features a 3.0-litre in-line six that does its duty in the S-Class and E-Class. Paired to both is a 9-speed automatic transmission. Naturally, we had tested both, but it’s the AMG that trickles our fancy. Not to mention the AMG derivative also demands a hefty on-road price. Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG, then again, rushes through the 0-100kph sprint in just 4.5 seconds - and that's great, considering this SUV weighs over 2.5 tonnes. It also manages a top speed of 220kph, and if you opt for the performance pack, that becomes 240kph. The SUV accelerates effortlessly, and the shifts are really rapid in Sport and Sport+ modes. Then there's the Slippery mode for slushy situations, and of course, Comfort mode which is best used in the city. As for the exhaust - it sounds loud, and is sure to get attention. We'd also recommend using the paddle-shifters. Put your foot down, and the G 63 simply surges ahead, but all this manic performance is best suited to open stretches of asphalt. Around corners, the G 63 is pretty confident, but you feel all that weight being lugged around. The light steering is a boon, but as you go faster, it weighs up nicely with good feedback as well. In terms of ride quality, it does get a bit stiff, but there's nothing to really complain about.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class Mileage
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class' ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 8.13kmpl for the G 63 AMG petrol model.
