Mercedes-Benz India has announced the start of local production of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS at its Chakan facility near Pune, marking a major milestone for the brand’s manufacturing operations in the country. With this move, India becomes the first market outside the United States to locally assemble the ultra-luxury Maybach SUV.
Prices have been reduced with the start of local production - the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is priced from Rs 2.75 crore to Rs 4.10 crore (ex-showroom). To mark the model’s success, Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a Maybach GLS Celebration Edition, priced at Rs 4.10 crore, positioned as the most exclusive iteration of the SUV.

The powertrain of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS remains unchanged - a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, producing 557bhp and 770Nm of torque, is paired with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The emphasis, however, remains on rear-seat comfort, with highlights including individual executive seats, a full-length centre console, ‘E-ACTIVE Body Control’ suspension, ‘MANUFAKTUR’ leather upholstery, a Burmester 3D surround sound system, folding tables, and a refrigerated compartment.
Launched in India in June 2021, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS has established itself as a flagship chauffeur-driven luxury SUV, witnessing sustained demand despite being offered solely as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) import until now. Its transition to local production reflects the brand’s broader focus on prioritising value and exclusivity over volume in the Indian luxury car market.
The decision highlights India’s growing strategic importance for Mercedes-Maybach globally, with the country now featuring among the brand’s top five global markets. According to Mercedes-Benz India, local assembly will enable shorter delivery timelines, improved availability, and greater flexibility in catering to customer demand for top-end luxury vehicles.
The announcement was made during a broader showcase by Mercedes-Benz India, which also saw the launch of the EQS SUV Celebration Edition (Rs 1.34 crore for the 5-seater and Rs 1.48 crore for the 7-seater variant, ex-showroom) and the rollout of MB.CHARGE Public, the brand’s unified public charging ecosystem. Mercedes-Benz India also confirmed plans to introduce 12 new products in 2026, including new models, facelifts, top-end vehicles, and electric vehicles.
