BMW has offered an early look at the all-new iX3, its first model to be based on the next-generation Neue Klasse platform, ahead of its official debut at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich this September. Production of the SUV is scheduled to begin by the end of the year at the BMW Group’s new state-of-the-art facility in Debrecen, Hungary. However, before all of this, the German automaker has revealed some key details about the iX3’s advanced electric drivetrain and technology. The new iX3 features BMW’s latest Gen6 electric drive system, which is a big step forward in battery and motor technology. It uses new cylindrical battery cells that can store 20% more energy compared to the older battery cells BMW used before. These batteries are built into the car’s structure, which helps make the vehicle lighter and stronger. It improves both how far the car can travel on a charge and how well it performs. The Gen6 system will first appear in the iX3 and then be used in many other BMW models in the future.
Owing to its advanced battery system, the iX3 prototype can go up to 800 kilometres on one charge according to WLTP standards, and even 900 kilometres on the CLTC cycle. With a 400 kW DC fast charger on board, the iX3 makes recharging quick and convenient for any journey. Moreover, it can add over 350 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes of charging. The iX3 has a smart charging flap that opens by itself when you’re ready to charge and closes when you’re done. Thanks to AI, it learns your charging habits and spots, so it knows exactly when to open the flap.
The SUV features bi-directional charging technology, power external devices, or even feed electricity back into the grid. It supports Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) at up to 3.7 kW, along with Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capabilities. To support this, BMW offers a new 19.2 kW bi-directional DC wallbox charger that allows energy to flow seamlessly both ways, boosting convenience and energy efficiency.

The BMW iX3 is packed with smart driver aids like lane change warnings, road priority alerts, and a radar-powered safe exit system that keeps passengers safe by detecting nearby vehicles. It features the Symbiotic driver assistance system, which lets drivers smoothly intervene with the accelerator or brakes without disabling the active self-driving functions.
