Maruti Suzuki has announced a historic achievement as the cumulative production of the Wagon R in India has officially crossed the 35 lakh (3.5 million) unit mark. This significant milestone, reached in December 2025, highlights the hatchback’s 25-year legacy as a cornerstone of the Indian automotive market. Originally launched in December 1999, the Wagon R has evolved through three generations, consistently adapting to the needs of Indian families while maintaining its iconic “tall-boy” design. Currently manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar, Haryana, the car has built an emotional connection with millions of buyers. With this production feat, the Wagon R now joins an elite club alongside the Maruti Suzuki Alto and Swift, becoming one of the few nameplates in the country to achieve such high-volume domestic production.

Beyond India, the Wagon R has established a formidable global presence. In August 2025, cumulative global sales for the model surpassed 1 crore (10 million) units, underlining its international appeal. While India remains its primary hub for production and sales, the model is also manufactured in Japan, Hungary and Indonesia. Today, the Wagon R is exported to over 75 markets worldwide, showcasing the success of the “Make in India” initiative on a global stage.
The Wagon R has seen a steady transformation since its debut. While the first generation relied on a 1.0-litre engine, the second generation in 2010 introduced modern design and suspension tweaks. The current third-generation model, launched in 2019, is built on the advanced fifth-generation HEARTECT platform. This platform provides a stronger, safer and more spacious structure, ensuring the car remains compliant with modern safety and emission standards.

The 2025 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R comes equipped with comprehensive safety features, including six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) on select trims. Buyers can choose between a 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine, with the popular S-CNG option available for those seeking lower running costs. With prices ranging from Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 6.95 lakh (ex-showroom), the Wagon R remains one of the most accessible and feature-packed hatchbacks in India.
