Diesel vehicles that are more than 10 years old will not be permitted on Delhi roads, following  a ruling by the National Green Tribunal.

Despite the incoming of CNG vehicles and Metro, air pollution have been rapidly rising in Delhi over the past few years and it comes as no surprise that it was regarded as the most polluted city in the world(in terms of air quality) in a survey by WHO.

Citing diesel vehicles as the prime source of air pollution, the Tribunal banned all such vehicles that were purchased 10 years ago or before.

"It has been pointed out that diesel is the prime source of bringing air pollution in Delhi. Diesel fumes cause damage to the lungs, brain and can cause even cancer.” Justice Swatanter Kumar said: The situation is so alarming that medically people have been even advised to leave Delhi.”

The Tribunal has also asked the transport department of Delhi to compile the data of all vehicles registered before 10 years. It also rebuked the authorities for not following its orders given in November and December.

“All authorities and the state have utterly failed to comply to the directions of the Tribunal. Authorities have not even initiated action for compliance,” the statement continued. “Due to the increasing pollutants of air, the life of residents of NCR Delhi is becoming more vulnerable to various diseases and the greatest sufferers are young children.”
