Suzuki Motor Corporation recently celebrated a major milestone as the Wagon R crossed 1 crore (10 million) units in global sales. First launched in Japan in September 1993, the tallboy hatchback made its way to other markets over time and entered India in 1999. It took nearly 32 years to hit this mark, making the Wagon R one of Suzuki’s most successful models worldwide.
In India, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been a familiar name for decades. By May 2023, it had already sold 30 lakh (3 million) units in the country. Known for being a sensible city car, the Wagon R has found favour with Indian buyers, especially first-time car owners. Over the years, it has become a key driver of Suzuki’s success in the Indian market.

The sales journey of the Wagon R has been consistent. It reached the 1 million mark in 1998, doubled to 2 million by 2002, and continued to grow steadily—crossing 5 million by 2010 and 9 million by early 2022. The 10 million milestone, achieved in 2025, shows how the model has remained relevant across generations and regions.
In India, the Wagon R is available with two petrol engine options—a 1.0-litre three-cylinder and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder K-Series. The bigger engine also comes with a factory-fitted CNG version. This variety has helped the car reach different types of buyers, whether they’re looking for a basic commuter or a fuel-efficient alternative.
