<p>After years of discussions, India and the European Union have finally agreed on a free trade deal, and this one has caught the attention of car buyers and auto industry watchers. The reason is simple. Europe builds many of the cars Indians want, while India remains one of the toughest markets in the world for imports due to high duties. The India–EU FTA aims to ease trade between both sides by cutting tariffs and simplifying regulations. For the auto sector, this could slowly change how European cars enter India. The agreement is expected to take effect from 2027. Under the newly concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement, these tariffs will come down to 10 per cent under an annual quota of 250,000 vehicles. The deal, finalised after nearly two decades of negotiations, sets a clear framework for European car imports while keeping volumes under control.</p><p>One thing worth keeping in mind is that the lower tariff applies only to cars built in Europe. If a model is manufactured outside the EU, it will not get the benefit even if it wears a European badge. Take BMW for example. The M2 is built in Mexico, while the XM and X6 are manufactured in the USA, which means these models will not fall under the reduced duty structure.</p><h2>What does this Mean for Car Prices in India</h2><p>Lower import duties will bring down the landing cost, especially for fully imported models. Final pricing will still depend on brand strategy, exchange rates and state taxes. So while price drops may not happen overnight, the gap between imported and locally built cars is will shrink over time, giving buyers more choice and better value in the premium segment.</p><h2>Carmakers may Rethink their India Strategy</h2><p>The trade deal could push European brands to take a fresh look at their India plans after the tariff drop. With lower duties, it becomes easier to bring in more models and rethink pricing for the market. Some manufacturers may still prefer local assembly to keep costs in check, but the FTA gives brands more room when planning investments and future launches.</p><h2>Local Manufacturing and Suppliers Stay in Focus</h2><p>Indian component makers may face added competition, but there is also an opportunity. If more brands increase assembly operations, demand for&nbsp;locally sourced parts could rise. Suppliers that meet EU standards may even gain export access. Safeguard clauses in the agreement allow the government to step in if imports grow too fast, keeping local manufacturing protected as the deal is rolled out in phases.</p>

India-EU FTA Explained: Impact on Car Prices, Imports, and Local Manufacturing

Under the India-EU free trade agreement, import duties on cars and bikes from BMW, Ducati, Mercedes-Benz and Audi will fall from 110% to 10% under a 250000 vehicle quota.

Electric vehicles may stay outside the first phase to protect local manufacturing. Even so, if approved, the agreement could reshape the premium segment and make Euro-built cars and bikes a more common sight on Indian roads.</p>

    <strong>We’ve described the RS Q8 as ‘a Lamborghini Urus Performante in a Boss suit.’ Is that an accurate description?</strong>
</p>

<p>I wouldn’t like to align this car with any other brand, even if it is within our Group. What matters most is how our customers perceive it. We have sold many units, and most of the allocations are booked even before they arrive in India. Customers who want these cars are highly performance-oriented, but also don’t want to compromise on luxury. The RS Q8 offers that balance along with day-to-day usability. You don’t have to wait for the weekend to drive it. The thrill is always at your fingertips.</p>

<p>
    <strong>Your portfolio is aging in India, but internationally you’ve introduced the A5, Q5 and A6. When can we expect these new models in India?</strong>
</p>

<p>It’s always a matter of time, and I can’t disclose specific timelines right now. Our focus is to serve customers with the current portfolio in the best possible way. New products will come as part of the normal lifecycle. Some lines are at the end of their cycle, and we are waiting for new products to get homologated and ready for India. Many will also be manufactured locally. You will see announcements in the next few months.</p>

    <strong>Globally, it’s a difficult time. EV adoption is uncertain. How does Audi navigate this tricky environment?</strong>
</p>

<p>Times are changing, and EV penetration projections have shifted from what they were three years ago. The most important thing for us is agility. To align ourselves with evolving customer needs. We must balance Indian market demands with global long-term strategies and research investments. Tough times push us to look inward and innovate. We’re confident we will come out stronger.</p>



<p>
    <strong>With AI becoming central to business, how is Audi integrating AI into its operations?</strong>
</p>

<p>AI is everywhere, and we are evaluating what tools to use. It will help especially with data management, improving how we use existing data that previously depended on legacy systems. Cars won’t become ‘AI,’ but they will become more intelligent. From a sales and marketing perspective, AI will enhance data intelligence, feedback collection, digitisation and process optimisation. We’re implementing it in small steps, and it will strengthen us without changing who we are.</p>

    <strong>Is E20 fuel a point of concern, especially for older audi cars?</strong>
</p>

<p>From April 2020, our entire portfolio is material-compliant with E20. Before that, many of our cars were diesel, so we don’t see major challenges. Concerns are mostly about perception in regards to the potential impact to fuel efficiency. It’s early days, but we haven’t seen significant issues. Customer concerns are addressed based on our testing and knowledge.</p>

    <strong>How has the Indian luxury car customer evolved over the years?</strong>
</p>

<p>The change has been massive. The average age has dropped. 42% of our buyers are under 40, and if we extend that to 50 years, it’s over 70%. Earlier, the segment was chauffeur-driven, now most buyers want to drive themselves. Women buyers have increased significantly, from almost none about 10-15 years ago to 11-12% today. Ownership is becoming experience-driven. EV acceptability is good because most luxury cars are city-driven. There’s also a cultural shift from saving to spending, accelerated by the pandemic.</p>

    <strong>What are your plans for 2026?</strong>
</p>

<p>The industry has been stagnant, around 50,000 units sold, with fluctuations. GST rationalisation will give a positive push. We must widen the bottom of the luxury pyramid and attract new buyers. The gap between non-luxury and luxury pricing is narrowing, creating new and exciting opportunities. Challenges like forex fluctuations remain. <p>Audi has unveiled the new AUDI E SUV concept at the Guangzhou Auto Show. This is the second model from the AUDI sub-brand made for China. The concept previews the upcoming AUDI E8 SUV that will enter production in early 2026. Audi is expanding its electric vehicle plans in China with support from its partnerships with FAW and SAIC. </p><p>The company introduced five models in China in the second half of 2025 and plans more launches in 2026. The <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/audi/">AUDI </a>sub-brand has also seen strong demand, with the E5 Sportback crossing 10,000 preorders within thirty minutes of its reveal. It also gets wide fenders, a large front logo, and a fin-style C-pillar. The SUV measures 5,057mm in length, 2,042mm in width, and 1,786mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 3,060mm. In the end, ten winners emerged:&nbsp;eight vehicles earned the prestigious ‘Best of 2025’ title, while two record-breaking performers were crowned Performance Car of the Year and Performance Bike of the Year.&nbsp;Let’s take a closer look at our ‘Best of 2025’.</p><h2>Who Chooses the 'Best of 2025'?</h2><p>The autoX Awards 2025 follow a simple and clear testing process. A team of road testers with over 100 years of combined experience scores each vehicle across key parameters. All scores are then averaged, which keeps the results fair and transparent.</p><p>For performance runs, autox Editor-in-Chief and part-time racer Dhruv Behl records lap times for cars. Two-time JK 1,000cc champion Simranjeet Singh, aka Simran King, handles the lap times for motorcycles.</p><p>The 2025 car jury comprises Dhruv Behl (Editor-in-Chief), Ishan Raghava (Consulting Editor), Shivank Bhatt (Assistant Editor), Siddharth (Special Correspondent), Karan Mathur (Multimedia Producer), Kingshuk Dutta (Features Editor), Aakash S Paul (Special Correspondent) and Ashish Jha (Jury Member). With 50 vehicles lined up, the testing is focused on the 2.0-kilometre technical loop at the back of the circuit. The updated electronics — including traction, wheelie and engine-brake control — make it easier to push hard, while the lighter frame, new symmetrical swing-arm and updated Ohlins suspension help it stay stable on the brakes and quick out of corners.</p><p>Ducati has given the bike sharper bodywork, slimmer winglets and a look that still nods to the iconic 916. The new hollow swing-arm and lighter frame also improve the stance. Ducati has tucked the foot-rests in by 10mm to help with lean angle on track. The scooter delivered consistent results across all track metrics, which helped it secure the top honour in the two-wheeler category.</p><p>The NTorq 150 stood out for its design, features and overall value. Its styling, tech and ride-modes added to its appeal, making it a complete package. The judges rated it highly for practicality and the kind of everyday usability that gives it an extra “X-factor” in a crowded segment.</p><h2>Honda CB 125 Hornet&nbsp;(Total Points: 70.2)</h2><p>

With its smooth mid-range performance, crisp gearshifts and planted chassis, it handled the test track with composure and agility.</p><p>From its twin-LED headlamp with DRLs to golden upside-down front forks, the Hornet’s styling draws cues from higher-cc siblings and gives it a bold look. It includes a 4.2-inch TFT instrument display with Bluetooth connectivity, muscular tank extensions and full-LED lighting. The blend of sporty ergonomics and segment-first hardware makes its visual and functional appeal strong.</p><h2>Honda CB 125 Hornet&nbsp;(Total Points: 69.7)</h2>

It’s a strange, strange world out there. Politicians are doing comedy, comedians are doing politics, Trump wants a Nobel Peace Prize, and SUVs are beating sports cars around racetracks. <p>It’s the most powerful ICE car ever to come out of Ingolstadt, and since it wears the RS badge, it obviously goes like stink. Need proof? It currently holds the Nürburgring Nordschleife record for the fastest production SUV, with a lap time of 7:36.7 – faster than some of your bedroom-poster icons like the Lexus LFA, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, and Lamborghini Murciélago SV.</p><p>With a resume that strong, we expected the RS Q8 Performance to be among the fastest cars in our test. What we didn’t expect was for it to absolutely annihilate the competition, which included the Aston Martin DBX 707, BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG CLE 53, and Porsche Macan Turbo EV. <p>The RS Q8 Performance’s recipe for speed starts with its impeccable 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which produces 631bhp and 850Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic and Audi’s legendary quattro system. The result? A 0 – 100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 305km/h – those are supercar numbers, period.</p>

<p>What truly boggles the mind, though, is its handling. Thanks to the immense grip provided by its chassis, AWD system, and sport differential, the RS Q8 Performance behaves more like a surgical tool than a sledgehammer on the track. The steering is quick and precise, and that massive grille can sniff out apexes like a bloodhound. The whole experience is thrilling but never intimidating. You can stand on the throttle through most corners, and it won’t bite. The AWD system helps rotate the rear mid-corner, allowing you to flirt with four-wheel drifts like a rally car before catapulting you out of bends with incredible traction. All the while, the V8 roars with a wicked, muscle-car soundtrack that adds drama to the whole experience. It’s almost laughable how sharp and fast this high-riding family SUV is on the racetrack.</p><p>

Sure, it may not have the Italian’s flash or flamboyance, but when it comes to delivering a supercar-like experience in a family SUV body, it’s every bit as capable, if not better. And the best part? It costs only half as much. Makes you wonder why anybody would want an Urus over the RS Q8 Performance, doesn’t it? But, then, for better or worse, that’s the new world order.
