<p>I had the pleasure of driving the Audi Q7 from Delhi to Ladakh over the summer last year, and it reinforced all the virtues I had always known the Q7 had – an extremely refined drivetrain, an amazingly comfortable ride, and a supremely capable chassis. All the virtues that it shares with the Q8, except one – the Q8 also adds a pretty svelte and rakish roofline. And the best part is that it does so without compromising headroom or cabin space. Sure, it does lose about 150 litres of boot space, but unless you’re transporting a cactus (or cacti for that matter), it doesn’t materially affect practicality. The only real issue, then, is the fact that the Q8 will set you back an extra 15 to 30 lakhs over the Q7, depending on the best deal you can negotiate for either one. And that’s a pretty substantial sum for what is essentially the same machine under the skin.&nbsp;</p><p>Personally, I know which one I would choose – that is, the Q7 every day of the week. Frankly, I happen to like the way the Q7 looks. Plus, it’s more honest in the way it presents itself. There are no airs and graces, just a no-nonsense style for an excellent no-nonsense machine. It does have some shortcomings, though – all of which the Q8 inherits. The Q7 is more than a little long in the tooth. Audi has been struggling with modernising its model line-up in India, and the Q7 is a striking example of that. Internationally, the Q3 and Q5 are all-new, and a new Q7 can’t be too far behind – but Audi’s product planners had to go back to the drawing board since their electrification strategy didn’t quite play out the way they had hoped. EV demand has ebbed and flowed, and many automakers have had to realign priorities to suit market realities.</p><p>The Q7 is just one such casualty. As a result, neither the Q7 nor the Q8 have wireless Apple CarPlay, for instance, something that you would expect in even the most entry-level vehicle today. That said, if the Q8 drove differently from its more sedate-looking sibling, it might make a stronger case for itself. As it stands, it’s virtually indistinguishable from behind the wheel. If it had inherited some of the RS Q8 dynamics – which enabled it to win our 2025 Performance Car of the Year title – the Q8 would make a more compelling case for itself. As it stands, I would save a bit of cash and choose the Q7 every day of the week.</p>

The Audi Q8 looks sharper and costs more, but beneath the style, is it really any different from the dependable, no-nonsense Q7?

<p>After years of discussions, India and the European Union have finally agreed on a free trade deal, and this one has caught the attention of car buyers and auto industry watchers. The reason is simple. Europe builds many of the cars Indians want, while India remains one of the toughest markets in the world for imports due to high duties. The India–EU FTA aims to ease trade between both sides by cutting tariffs and simplifying regulations. For the auto sector, this could slowly change how European cars enter India. The agreement is expected to take effect from 2027. Under the newly concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement, these tariffs will come down to 10 per cent under an annual quota of 250,000 vehicles. The deal, finalised after nearly two decades of negotiations, sets a clear framework for European car imports while keeping volumes under control.</p><p>One thing worth keeping in mind is that the lower tariff applies only to cars built in Europe. If a model is manufactured outside the EU, it will not get the benefit even if it wears a European badge. Take BMW for example. The M2 is built in Mexico, while the XM and X6 are manufactured in the USA, which means these models will not fall under the reduced duty structure.</p><h2>What does this Mean for Car Prices in India</h2><p>Lower import duties will bring down the landing cost, especially for fully imported models. Final pricing will still depend on brand strategy, exchange rates and state taxes. So while price drops may not happen overnight, the gap between imported and locally built cars is will shrink over time, giving buyers more choice and better value in the premium segment.</p><h2>Carmakers may Rethink their India Strategy</h2><p>The trade deal could push European brands to take a fresh look at their India plans after the tariff drop. With lower duties, it becomes easier to bring in more models and rethink pricing for the market. Some manufacturers may still prefer local assembly to keep costs in check, but the FTA gives brands more room when planning investments and future launches.</p><h2>Local Manufacturing and Suppliers Stay in Focus</h2><p>Indian component makers may face added competition, but there is also an opportunity. If more brands increase assembly operations, demand for&nbsp;locally sourced parts could rise. Suppliers that meet EU standards may even gain export access. Safeguard clauses in the agreement allow the government to step in if imports grow too fast, keeping local manufacturing protected as the deal is rolled out in phases.</p>

In this exclusive autoX interview, Dhruv Behl speaks to Balbir Singh Dhillon, Brand Director, Audi India, after the Audi RS Q8 Performance wins Performance Car of the Year at the autoX Awards 2025.

    <strong>We’ve described the RS Q8 as ‘a Lamborghini Urus Performante in a Boss suit.’ Is that an accurate description?</strong>
</p>

<p>I wouldn’t like to align this car with any other brand, even if it is within our Group. What matters most is how our customers perceive it. We have sold many units, and most of the allocations are booked even before they arrive in India. Customers who want these cars are highly performance-oriented, but also don’t want to compromise on luxury. The RS Q8 offers that balance along with day-to-day usability. You don’t have to wait for the weekend to drive it. The thrill is always at your fingertips.</p>

    <strong>Your portfolio is aging in India, but internationally you’ve introduced the A5, Q5 and A6. When can we expect these new models in India?</strong>
</p>

<p>It’s always a matter of time, and I can’t disclose specific timelines right now. Our focus is to serve customers with the current portfolio in the best possible way. New products will come as part of the normal lifecycle. Some lines are at the end of their cycle, and we are waiting for new products to get homologated and ready for India. Many will also be manufactured locally. You will see announcements in the next few months.</p>

    <strong>Globally, it’s a difficult time. EV adoption is uncertain. How does Audi navigate this tricky environment?</strong>
</p>

<p>Times are changing, and EV penetration projections have shifted from what they were three years ago. The most important thing for us is agility. To align ourselves with evolving customer needs. We must balance Indian market demands with global long-term strategies and research investments. Tough times push us to look inward and innovate. We’re confident we will come out stronger.</p>



<p>
    <strong>With AI becoming central to business, how is Audi integrating AI into its operations?</strong>
</p>

<p>AI is everywhere, and we are evaluating what tools to use. It will help especially with data management, improving how we use existing data that previously depended on legacy systems. Cars won’t become ‘AI,’ but they will become more intelligent. From a sales and marketing perspective, AI will enhance data intelligence, feedback collection, digitisation and process optimisation. We’re implementing it in small steps, and it will strengthen us without changing who we are.</p>

    <strong>Is E20 fuel a point of concern, especially for older audi cars?</strong>
</p>

<p>From April 2020, our entire portfolio is material-compliant with E20. Before that, many of our cars were diesel, so we don’t see major challenges. Concerns are mostly about perception in regards to the potential impact to fuel efficiency. It’s early days, but we haven’t seen significant issues. Customer concerns are addressed based on our testing and knowledge.</p>

    <strong>How has the Indian luxury car customer evolved over the years?</strong>
</p>

<p>The change has been massive. The average age has dropped. 42% of our buyers are under 40, and if we extend that to 50 years, it’s over 70%. Earlier, the segment was chauffeur-driven, now most buyers want to drive themselves. Women buyers have increased significantly, from almost none about 10-15 years ago to 11-12% today. Ownership is becoming experience-driven. EV acceptability is good because most luxury cars are city-driven. There’s also a cultural shift from saving to spending, accelerated by the pandemic.</p>

    <strong>What are your plans for 2026?</strong>
</p>

<p>The industry has been stagnant, around 50,000 units sold, with fluctuations. GST rationalisation will give a positive push. We must widen the bottom of the luxury pyramid and attract new buyers. The gap between non-luxury and luxury pricing is narrowing, creating new and exciting opportunities. Challenges like forex fluctuations remain. <p><em><strong>From four-wheel steering to four-wheel drive and from seat massagers to a foot massager, Audi’s flagship is here to push the limits of the luxury limousine. &nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>What would you say if I asked you about the future? Perhaps you would find it intriguingly uncertain. Uncertainty, most often, is a companion on the unchartered course. But what if I were to tell you that you could have a peek into the future, an understanding of how life would be in the not-to-distant future. It would be exciting, wouldn’t it!</p>

<p>Now, since I’m not a <em>babaji </em>running a scam, I can’t tell you about your future life. However, what I can tell you is that there is a sure-fire way of looking into the future of the automobile. To get an idea of just what to expect from your average car in the course of the next decade or so, the answer always lies with the best cars in the world – I am, of course, talking about flagship luxury limousines.</p>

<p><strong>A glimpse into the unknown</strong><br />
A flagship luxury limousine is often a harbinger of technological advancement for a luxury carmaker – as it not only pushes the limits of innovation, science, and technology but also offers a glimpse into the future.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So, while the Audi A8 L is a couple of years late to the party in India, it has everything it takes, and more, to challenge the current versions of its arch-rivals, the BMW 7 Series and the revered Mercedes-Benz S-Class.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This flagship luxury limousine battle has been going on for quite a long time now, and at the forefront of it has been the German triumvirate of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Each of them try to outdo one another every couple of years by bringing in evolved versions of their flagship models that push the boundaries of technology and innovation.</p>

<p>It goes without saying that Audi’s fourth-generation A8 L, originally revealed a couple of years ago, was a step in this direction. Now, even though it’s a little late coming to our shores, be rest assured that it still has enough tricks up its sleeve to show you just what you can expect from cars of the future.</p>

<p>Right from its wraparound taillights, which make it look like a concept car at night, to its predictive active air suspension, which works within milliseconds to alter the ride individually for each wheel, and its Wi-Fi enabled rear-seat screens, the Audi A8 L very boldly illuminates the uncertain future.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The cabin welcomes you with a wide variety of design elements and trims. Traditionally, in such a car, you expect everything to be draped in leather or adorned with wood. However, Audi has tried a different approach, with Alcantara inserts in the leather, gloss plastic surfaces, faux metal trim elements, and LED lighting inserts. In fact, there is just so much going on here that the materials change every few millimetres. But it just seems to work perfectly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As expected, the A8 L comes with electronically adjustable… well, everything – from the air-vent covers and the seats to the sun blinds, everything can be adjusted with the press of a button.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Revel in opulence</strong><br />
Since it’s a luxury limousine, the most appropriate seat to be in is the rear passenger seat, which, at the touch of a button, reclines and pushes the front passenger seat forward to reveal a footrest – giving you the perfect first-class experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, all that’s left to do is activate the seat massager of course, but also the foot massager on the footrest – yes, you read that right, it also has a foot massager! The central touch-screen remote in the back also allows you to access the individual climate control operations for the rear seats, as well as the ventilated and heated rear seats, and, of course, instruct the hidden masseuse to do its thing. Oh, and if you want a chilled beverage, you also get a mini-fridge between the rear seats.</p>

<p>And if that’s not enough, you can stream your favourite movies and TV shows on the Wi-Fi enabled rear-entertainment screens, as they are android powered tablets! Given its ₹1.56 crore price, you’re more likely to be a corporate guru who needs to send e-mails, work on Excel sheets, and even host conference calls – all of which can be done using the tablets in the back of the A8.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Four-wheel wonder</strong><br />
When you think about four-wheel drive, usually you think of big, burly SUVs. But Audi’s legendary Quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system is not your typical low-range 4WD system – it’s a brilliant system with torque vectoring technology that offers tenacious grip over loose surfaces. So, while your A8 L limousine isn’t designed for off-roading, it sure can take on slippery surfaces, such as wet or snow-covered roads.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When it comes to comfort, the A8 L’s air springs are very good at cushioning any and all undulations, unless you attack a particularly patchy section of tarmac at high speeds, which seems to be the only chink in its armour. But, for the most part, the ride is pretty sublime. In terms of handling, it remains planted and absolutely confident at the limit, despite the car’s tendency to lean into sharp bends.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And it’s here that the other four-wheel system becomes a factor – I’m talking about the four-wheel steering. This electronic steering system turns the rear axle in the same direction as the front axle at higher speeds for better cornering stability. While, at low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels to give this rather long sedan the turning radius of a much smaller car. It truly is very impressive and makes driving the A8 an absolute breeze.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Light &amp; breezy</strong><br />
Speaking of breezy, this 55 TFSI A8 L for India comes with a 335bhp V6 petrol engine, which, as expected, is silky smooth. The car’s 8-speed automatic gearbox complements the engine perfectly, and, along with the light steering and relatively tight turning radius, makes the A8 L blissful to drive in the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The only hitch here is the slow kickdown response from the transmission under aggressive throttle inputs. However, this can be taken care of by putting the engine in Dynamic mode and the transmission in Sport mode. Although, this driving mode is best reserved for expressways where the A8 L becomes an epic cruise mobile.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Flagbearer by design</strong><br />
The A8 L is a true technological masterpiece, with its brilliant four-wheel-steering system, adaptive air suspension, and more. In its signature move as a flagship model, it pushes the limits in everything it offers – be it the foot massaging feature, the rear-seat entertainment package, or the sheer number of functions the tablet allows you to control.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So, it’s safe to say that you’ll get to see a lot of cool tech that you’ve never seen before – some of which you will likely see in more affordable cars in future. In that sense, it’s a true glimpse into the future, isn’t it?</p>
