<p>After years of discussions, India and the European Union have finally agreed on a free trade deal, and this one has caught the attention of car buyers and auto industry watchers. The reason is simple. Europe builds many of the cars Indians want, while India remains one of the toughest markets in the world for imports due to high duties. The India–EU FTA aims to ease trade between both sides by cutting tariffs and simplifying regulations. For the auto sector, this could slowly change how European cars enter India. The agreement is expected to take effect from 2027. Under the newly concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement, these tariffs will come down to 10 per cent under an annual quota of 250,000 vehicles. The deal, finalised after nearly two decades of negotiations, sets a clear framework for European car imports while keeping volumes under control.</p><p>One thing worth keeping in mind is that the lower tariff applies only to cars built in Europe. If a model is manufactured outside the EU, it will not get the benefit even if it wears a European badge. Take BMW for example. The M2 is built in Mexico, while the XM and X6 are manufactured in the USA, which means these models will not fall under the reduced duty structure.</p><h2>What does this Mean for Car Prices in India</h2><p>Lower import duties will bring down the landing cost, especially for fully imported models. Final pricing will still depend on brand strategy, exchange rates and state taxes. So while price drops may not happen overnight, the gap between imported and locally built cars is will shrink over time, giving buyers more choice and better value in the premium segment.</p><h2>Carmakers may Rethink their India Strategy</h2><p>The trade deal could push European brands to take a fresh look at their India plans after the tariff drop. With lower duties, it becomes easier to bring in more models and rethink pricing for the market. Some manufacturers may still prefer local assembly to keep costs in check, but the FTA gives brands more room when planning investments and future launches.</p><h2>Local Manufacturing and Suppliers Stay in Focus</h2><p>Indian component makers may face added competition, but there is also an opportunity. If more brands increase assembly operations, demand for&nbsp;locally sourced parts could rise. Suppliers that meet EU standards may even gain export access. Safeguard clauses in the agreement allow the government to step in if imports grow too fast, keeping local manufacturing protected as the deal is rolled out in phases.</p>

India-EU FTA Explained: Impact on Car Prices, Imports, and Local Manufacturing

Under the India-EU free trade agreement, import duties on cars and bikes from BMW, Ducati, Mercedes-Benz and Audi will fall from 110% to 10% under a 250000 vehicle quota.

    <strong>We’ve described the RS Q8 as ‘a Lamborghini Urus Performante in a Boss suit.’ Is that an accurate description?</strong>
</p>

<p>I wouldn’t like to align this car with any other brand, even if it is within our Group. What matters most is how our customers perceive it. We have sold many units, and most of the allocations are booked even before they arrive in India. Customers who want these cars are highly performance-oriented, but also don’t want to compromise on luxury. The RS Q8 offers that balance along with day-to-day usability. You don’t have to wait for the weekend to drive it. The thrill is always at your fingertips.</p>

    <strong>Your portfolio is aging in India, but internationally you’ve introduced the A5, Q5 and A6. When can we expect these new models in India?</strong>
</p>

<p>It’s always a matter of time, and I can’t disclose specific timelines right now. Our focus is to serve customers with the current portfolio in the best possible way. New products will come as part of the normal lifecycle. Some lines are at the end of their cycle, and we are waiting for new products to get homologated and ready for India. Many will also be manufactured locally. You will see announcements in the next few months.</p>

    <strong>Globally, it’s a difficult time. EV adoption is uncertain. How does Audi navigate this tricky environment?</strong>
</p>

<p>Times are changing, and EV penetration projections have shifted from what they were three years ago. The most important thing for us is agility. To align ourselves with evolving customer needs. We must balance Indian market demands with global long-term strategies and research investments. Tough times push us to look inward and innovate. We’re confident we will come out stronger.</p>



<p>
    <strong>With AI becoming central to business, how is Audi integrating AI into its operations?</strong>
</p>

<p>AI is everywhere, and we are evaluating what tools to use. It will help especially with data management, improving how we use existing data that previously depended on legacy systems. Cars won’t become ‘AI,’ but they will become more intelligent. From a sales and marketing perspective, AI will enhance data intelligence, feedback collection, digitisation and process optimisation. We’re implementing it in small steps, and it will strengthen us without changing who we are.</p>

    <strong>Is E20 fuel a point of concern, especially for older audi cars?</strong>
</p>

<p>From April 2020, our entire portfolio is material-compliant with E20. Before that, many of our cars were diesel, so we don’t see major challenges. Concerns are mostly about perception in regards to the potential impact to fuel efficiency. It’s early days, but we haven’t seen significant issues. Customer concerns are addressed based on our testing and knowledge.</p>

    <strong>How has the Indian luxury car customer evolved over the years?</strong>
</p>

<p>The change has been massive. The average age has dropped. 42% of our buyers are under 40, and if we extend that to 50 years, it’s over 70%. Earlier, the segment was chauffeur-driven, now most buyers want to drive themselves. Women buyers have increased significantly, from almost none about 10-15 years ago to 11-12% today. Ownership is becoming experience-driven. EV acceptability is good because most luxury cars are city-driven. There’s also a cultural shift from saving to spending, accelerated by the pandemic.</p>

    <strong>What are your plans for 2026?</strong>
</p>

<p>The industry has been stagnant, around 50,000 units sold, with fluctuations. GST rationalisation will give a positive push. We must widen the bottom of the luxury pyramid and attract new buyers. The gap between non-luxury and luxury pricing is narrowing, creating new and exciting opportunities. Challenges like forex fluctuations remain. <p>Audi has unveiled the new AUDI E SUV concept at the Guangzhou Auto Show. This is the second model from the AUDI sub-brand made for China. The concept previews the upcoming AUDI E8 SUV that will enter production in early 2026. Audi is expanding its electric vehicle plans in China with support from its partnerships with FAW and SAIC. </p><p>The company introduced five models in China in the second half of 2025 and plans more launches in 2026. The <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/audi/">AUDI </a>sub-brand has also seen strong demand, with the E5 Sportback crossing 10,000 preorders within thirty minutes of its reveal. It also gets wide fenders, a large front logo, and a fin-style C-pillar. The SUV measures 5,057mm in length, 2,042mm in width, and 1,786mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 3,060mm. A team of road testers with over 100 years of combined experience scores each vehicle across key parameters. It’s a strange, strange world out there. Politicians are doing comedy, comedians are doing politics, Trump wants a Nobel Peace Prize, and SUVs are beating sports cars around racetracks. <p>It’s the most powerful ICE car ever to come out of Ingolstadt, and since it wears the RS badge, it obviously goes like stink. Need proof? It currently holds the Nürburgring Nordschleife record for the fastest production SUV, with a lap time of 7:36.7 – faster than some of your bedroom-poster icons like the Lexus LFA, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, and Lamborghini Murciélago SV.</p><p>With a resume that strong, we expected the RS Q8 Performance to be among the fastest cars in our test. What we didn’t expect was for it to absolutely annihilate the competition, which included the Aston Martin DBX 707, BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG CLE 53, and Porsche Macan Turbo EV. With a staggering lap time of 1:02.8, the RS Q8 Performance is our ‘Performance Car of the Year 2025’.</p>

      
    
      
    


<p>The RS Q8 Performance’s recipe for speed starts with its impeccable 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which produces 631bhp and 850Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic and Audi’s legendary quattro system. The result? A 0 – 100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 305km/h – those are supercar numbers, period.</p>

<p>What truly boggles the mind, though, is its handling. Thanks to the immense grip provided by its chassis, AWD system, and sport differential, the RS Q8 Performance behaves more like a surgical tool than a sledgehammer on the track. The steering is quick and precise, and that massive grille can sniff out apexes like a bloodhound. The whole experience is thrilling but never intimidating. You can stand on the throttle through most corners, and it won’t bite. The AWD system helps rotate the rear mid-corner, allowing you to flirt with four-wheel drifts like a rally car before catapulting you out of bends with incredible traction. All the while, the V8 roars with a wicked, muscle-car soundtrack that adds drama to the whole experience. It’s almost laughable how sharp and fast this high-riding family SUV is on the racetrack.</p><p>

    As a luxury car, the RS Q8 Performance impresses just as much. The cabin is exquisitely built, laden with features, and tastefully garnished with RS-specific touches. The space inside is generous for family and friends, and with a simple press of the Drive Select button, it transforms from a track monster into a subdued luxury car.</p>

<p>What further seals the deal is that it’s mechanically identical to the Lamborghini Urus Performante. Sure, it may not have the Italian’s flash or flamboyance, but when it comes to delivering a supercar-like experience in a family SUV body, it’s every bit as capable, if not better. And the best part? It costs only half as much. Makes you wonder why anybody would want an Urus over the RS Q8 Performance, doesn’t it? But, then, for better or worse, that’s the new world order.

Audi RS Q8 Performance: Performance Car of the Year - autoX Awards 2025

The Audi RS Q8 Performance is the most powerful ICE car ever to come out of Ingolstadt, and since it wears the RS badge, it obviously goes like stink.

<p><em>The all-new Audi flag bearer, the Q7, will hit dealerships by this Diwali. But is it a proper firecracker? Siddharth Vinayak Patankar finds out.</em></p>

<p>At Audi headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, there must be a shrine of sorts for the Q7. Or at least there ought to be. One of the most successful crossovers of all time, the Q7 pretty much created the segment when it arrived way back in 2005. And I don’t say that lightly, since I’m well aware that Audi didn’t quite invent the SUV or the crossover. But the scurry to capture new buyers with this segment of cars by the premium brands was indeed kicked off by the Q7. Audi says it’s sold over half-a-million of them since its debut almost 10 years ago. Interestingly, even as the second generation was much delayed, the older car kept selling smartly – even getting sold out in some markets, despite the fact that the arrival of the next generation was confirmed for 2015.</p>

<p>So, now, we finally have the new, improved and more advanced second generation. The delay has meant that Audi had a larger mandate than before to ensure that the new car is a major step ahead, and not just a minor step-up from the first generation. So, it was with that thought in mind that I stepped off the plane at Sion airport, tucked away in a pristine Alpine valley, in picturesque Switzerland. As I walked to the hangar at the airfield where the new Q7 waited for us, the part that bothered me was – if Audi took so long, why not make it look radically new too? After all, the new gen TT and Q7 are carrying the flag of Audi’s new design language anyway, so why not make the new Q7 distinctly different from the first, while still being obviously Audi? While the new Q7 is different, mature, and attractive – it’s styling instantly reminds you of the old one. Look closer and you realise the proportions are different, and the car now appears wider and shorter (though it isn’t really).</p>

<p>The hanger housed a number of new Q7s, dressed in a sensational blue, a sparkling white, and a rather dull-by-comparison grey. There were also the odd dishwater browns lurking about, but I made a beeline to the blue one. Only to be told that my car was a white steed!</p>

<p>The engine options on offer? 3.0 TFSI and TDI. Naturally, I was interested in the latter – as that’s the car that will debut in India this year. Having said that, Audi doesn’t rule out the 3.0 TFSI in future, so I was curious to drive that too. And I did, but let’s talk about the diesel shall we?</p>

<p>The 3-litre diesel unit is available in two iterations – 268bhp / 600Nm and 218bhp / 500Nm. I drove the former, as that’s the one we’re getting. The drive involved leaving Sion and going across the flat valley, before ascending the mighty Alps to the quaint little village of Verbier. Oh, it may sound obscure and rural, but it’s actually the ‘secret’ holiday home destination for the rich and famous of Western Europe.</p>

<p>The 90-minute drive gave me a quick introduction to the new Q7. And also very quickly told me that Switzerland may not have been the best choice for this drive, since restrictive speed limits and narrow two-lane roads made for a boring drive most of the way. But, having said that, the car’s sharp handling and plethora of driver aids instantly came to the fore.</p>

<p>There’s a new diesel engine family at Audi, and the new TDI range makes its first appearance with the Q7. There is an instant sense of athleticism from this unit, and that’s not simply a function of its 268 horses. It’s almost unbelievable how silent it is too. Of course, you still know it’s a diesel, but only just – I really needed to keep telling myself that it was, in fact, a diesel! That’s not just because the cabin is well insulated, but also because overall noise levels – including road and wind noise – are distinctly less than before.</p>

<p>The Q7 now has a whole host of driver assistance features that it didn’t earlier. A lot of them work to protect you, by allowing the car to be more intuitive. There’s also some cool new stuff, like Traffic Jam Assist that allows the car to autonomously drive itself through largely straight-line, bumper-to-bumper city traffic by staying in its lane, and steering the car when needed. Of course, sharper corners and emergency manoeuvres still need the driver to take over, which means that you can’t switch off completely. The car can now also park itself in tighter spots. Audi has also updated systems like adaptive cruise control, but most of these use radar frequency – currently disallowed by the Indian government for use by the automobile industry. So, a lot of these new features will be disabled in the Indian car sadly – until legislation allows for them to be switched back on.</p>

<p>The Q7 has been designed to be 325 kilograms lighter than its predecessor – and yes, it is indeed 325kgs! That’s a result of reducing weight in every possible area of the car. The doors are 24kgs lighter and all aluminium now, the seats shave 19kgs, while the exhaust system is down by 19kgs, and the car’s structure is now a massive 71kgs lighter, and now uses more sheet and cast aluminium than before. Audi claims that the Q7 is the lightest all-wheel-drive SUV in its class now.</p>

<p>The drop in weight helps add to its now 28% increase in fuel efficiency, but also makes it more agile. Quattro is standard across the range, and its new lighter mid-differential also helps to lower the weight and make for a more efficient transmission. The diesel engine is superbly mated to the 8-speed gearbox, which has paddle shifters that are an absolute hoot. Downshifts are instant and the gearbox’s overall response is superb.</p>

<p>The Q7 now also has all-wheel-steering, though its not standard equipment. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn slightly in then opposite direction to the front wheels. This helps reduce the turning radius by 1 metre, and so helps in tight U-turns and parking situations. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction – giving you better stability and precise manoeuvring. Audi has also added Predictive Efficiency Assist, which helps gauge the most efficient driving based on the route ahead. This reduces consumption by as much as 10%.</p>

<p>The updated MMI (Multi Media Interface) has a large touch pad, so you can scrawl in instructions and addresses. The new navigation system is updated, and can be used with the map showing up on the infotainment screen and also on part of the new virtual cluster (similar to the one seen in the new TT). You can opt for the ‘standard’ Bose sound system, or the very high-end Bang &amp; Olufsen 3D sound system. At the rear, there is the option of twin tablets for rear occupants that allow you to control car functions and entertainment. And, by the way, they aren’t Samsung or Apple tablets – they’ve been developed by Audi, and are shatter proof in the event of an impact of any kind. Audi has crash tested them as well for added certification.</p>

<p>I expect the India-spec Q7 to be fully-loaded with a panoramic sunroof, 3-row seating standard, navigation, head-up display (also updated with sharper, crisper colours and display), and top notch leather. The virtual cluster and updated MMI system, plus the tablets at the rear will also be on offer – and will no doubt create a differentiation for the product. As I mentioned, I did drive the 3.0 TFSI petrol too – and having spent some time with it, I can assure you that the diesel is the superior car hands down. The petrol should be a lot punchier, and sportier – but it’s not. You are surprisingly aware of the car’s bulk (325kgs less I know), which is not the case with the TDI variant that feels far more agile.</p>

<p>Prices will go up, as compared to the outgoing model. Audi has long-term plans to locally assemble the car at the VW Groups’ Aurangabad plant, and so initial pricing should take that into consideration. The new Q7 arrives in time for Diwali, and will be once again the fitting flagship for the four-ringed Bavarian in India.</p>
