BMW finally enters the entry-level luxury sedan segment in India with the new 2 Series Gran Coupé.

BMW has launched the all-new 2 Series Gran Coupe in India, with prices starting from ₹39.30 lakh for the 220d Sportline and going up to ₹41.40 lakh for the top-spec 220d M Sport (all prices are ex-showroom). Compared to the predicted price figures, which were in the ₹33 – ₹35 lakh range, the 2 Series has been priced quite steeply. At ₹39.30 lakh, the entry-spec 220d Sportline is priced just ₹2.80 lakh lower than the entry-level diesel 3 Series (320d Sport).

For now, the 2 Series is available only with a diesel powertrain. As per Mr Vikram Pawah, President (BMW Group India), the petrol derivative is confirmed and will follow in the coming months. So, expect the petrol 2 Series Gran Coupé to have a slightly lower starting price. Bookings for the 2 Series Gran Coupé had opened on 6th October, for ₹50,000.

BMW 2 Series engine

Powering the BMW 220d is a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel motor that produces 188bhp and 400Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via BMW's eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, that also comes with a Launch Control feature. This happens to be the same engine that also powers the BMW 3 Series (320d), although the 3 Series is rear-wheel-drive. As for the soon-to-arrive petrol variant (likely to be called the 220i), it could feature a de-tuned version of the 2.0-litre engine that powers the 330i.

Apart from the M Sport kit, the 220d M Sport also offers LED fog lamps, BMW Gesture Control, wireless phone charging, a 205W 10-speaker audio system and 18-inch alloy wheels. In comparison, the 220d Sportline offers 17-inch alloys and a 100W six-speaker audio system. BMW Live Cockpit Professional (10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and BMW OS 7.0) is standard on both trims.
