Looking for a new car to buy in 2020? You may want to look at this list of upcoming cars in 2020 before you write that cheque in favour of one of the existing models. From a new Hyundai i20 to a compact SUV from Kia, there's lots coming your way

1. Tata Altroz

Based on Tata's new ALFA platform, the Altroz will be launched with two engine options - a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel. The petrol will churn out 86bhp and 113Nm while the diesel will put out 90bhp and 200Nm. Tata will only launch the manual transmission option to start with, an AMT will be introduced later. 2. New Hyundai i20:

Expected Launch: April 2020

Work on the next-gen i20 is almost complete, with the new model in its final stages of development. It will be the third-gen model of the premium hatchback since its debut. The new car will be bigger in size with some pretty bold styling that will definitely turn heads. Powertrain options for the new car are expected include a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, along with a new diesel engine option for India.

Hyundai Aura Compact Sedan

3. Hyundai Aura:

Price: Rs 7 -11 lakh

The Aura is the compact sedan version of Hyundai’s new Nios hatchback. So, like the Nios, it, too, will be brimmed with features, such as wireless, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. The car will be offered with a choice of a 1.0-litre turbo petrol, a 1.2 naturally aspirated petrol, and a 1.2-litre turbo diesel. All models will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.2 petrol and diesel engines will have a 5-speed AMT on offer.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza India 2020

4. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Facelift:

Price: Rs 8 -11 lakh

Expected Launch: February 2020

Maruti Suzuki will give a mild makeover to the Vitara Brezza in 2020. The refreshed Vitara Brezza will come with a number of aesthetic upgrades, as well as some new features. However, more importantly, the updated model will mark the end of the road for the 1.3-litre diesel engine in the current Brezza. Thanks to the upcoming BS-VI norms, the new Brezza will only be offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine – the same motor that currently powers the Ciaz and the Ertiga. As a result, it’s expected to come with Maruti Suzuki’s mild-hybrid technology. A 5-speed manual gearbox will be standard, and a 4-speed automatic – like in the Ertiga – is also expected.

5. Kia Compact SUV:

Price: Rs 8-13.5 lakh

Expected Launch: October 2020

The compact SUV from Kia will be closely related to the Hyundai Venue in terms of its underpinnings and powertrain options. Although, the diesel model is likely to be offered with the 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine of the Seltos, although in a detuned state. Expect the car to feature some fairly bold styling cues to differentiate it from its Hyundai cousin. It is likely to be offered with more tech and equipment too.

6. Mahindra Thar

Expected Launch: March 2020

The second-gen model of Mahindra’s rugged off-roader, the Thar, is expected to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo and is likely to go on sale soon after. The new Thar will be offered in both hard-top and soft-top versions and will be based on a new platform. It’ll also be offered with new powertrain options. The Thar will be launched with a new BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine, while a petrol version is also going to feature in the next-gen model. A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, and a six-speed automatic may also be available. Other than that, the new Thar will be equipped with more features and equipment than its predecessor and will meet the new safety regulations.

Hyundai I10 2020

7. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios - 99bhp

Price: Rs 10.5 lakh

Word has it that Hyundai is working on a higher spec i10 Nios to attract those buyers who prefer a more powerful version than the standard petrol model on offer. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which does duty in the Venue automatic at the moment. The 1.0-litre Venue is offered with a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes, although the new Nios will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox to keeping the costs in check.

New Honda City

8. New Honda City

Price: Rs 11.5-17.5 lakh

Expected Launch: March 2020

Longer, wider, and taller than before, the new fifth-generation Honda City will be here in India by the second quarter of 2020. The new City looks more streamlined now in terms of its design lines, as they are more minimalistic. The car gets a radical interior redesign as well and more equipment. Engine options for the India model will continue to include the 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, while a hybrid may be offered at a later date.

9. Mahindra Scorpio

Price: Rs 11-18 lakh

Expected Launch: April 2020

In 2020, Mahindra will bring the all-new Scorpio. The test mules of the upcoming SUV have already been spotted on multiple occasions, meaning that it’s in the final stage of testing. The new Scorpio will be underpinned by an all-new ladder-frame platform, and that’s to say that it’ll retain its ruggedness even in the next-gen model. However, design and size-wise, it’s expected to take the game forward, as it’s going to be more aggressive and bigger than the current version. Under the hood, the new Scorpio is expected to be launched with a new 2.0-litre BS-VI compliant diesel engine that will develop around 158bhp. There will be a petrol variant as well. A six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered with the new vehicle.

Hyundai Creta 2020

10. New Hyundai Creta:

Price: Rs 11-19 lakh

Expected Launch: March 2020

First showcased at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, the second-generation Creta will come to our shores in early 2020. While the new Creta retains a similar silhouette as the current-gen car, it has a completely revised front end with an even larger front grille, and the headlights are now mounted on the front bumper, as is the case with a lot of new SUVs. It will come loaded with even more equipment and a new set of BSVI compliant engine options.

11. Mahindra XUV500

Price: Rs 12-19 lakh

Expected Launch: June 2020

The new XUV500 will be based on an all-new platform and is expected to be lighter and more rigid than the existing model. Expect some big changes on the design front – both inside and out. Not to mention, it’ll also come loaded with new features and equipment, including a large horizontally-stacked touchscreen infotainment system. Powering the new XUV500 will be BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine, which will replace the current car’s 2.2-litre unit. A petrol engine will also be on offer. A six-speed manual will be standard, while a six-speed automatic will be offered as well.

Tata Buzzard Gravitas Harrier 7 Seater India Launch 2020

12. Tata Gravitas:

Price: Rs 17-20 lakh

Expected Launch: February 2020

Come February 2020, Tata will launch the 7-seat version of the Harrier. This bigger, taller, and more spacious version of the Harrier has been christened the Gravitas. Apart from the inclusion of the third row, the Gravitas is expected to be largely similar to the Harrier in terms of features and equipment. The Gravitas will come powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine, too, but it’s expected to be BS-VI compliant. Power output and torque figures should be similar to the Harrier as well – 138bhp and 350Nm. However, with the Gravitas, Tata will offer the vehicle with a six-speed automatic, in addition to the six-speed manual gearbox. The Gravitas is expected to command a premium of around a lakh over the Harrier.
