The Tata Punch iCNG is the newest product in the Indian automotive market and one of many feature-rich, high-end vehicles and SUVs that now come equipped with an optional CNG kit directly from the factory. The Punch iCNG is available for purchase over eight months after its debut at the latest edition of the Auto Expo. The CNG range of the SUV costs up to Rs 1.61 lakh more than standard petrol models. It is the homegrown automaker's fourth offering with a clean fuel alternative, and it competes directly with the recently launched Hyundai Exter, which also comes with a CNG version. Speaking of the powertrain details, both CNG vehicles are only offered with a 5-speed manual transmission, with the Punch iCNG appearing to have somewhat better performance on paper than the Exter CNG. The 1.2-litre petrol engines with CNG propell both Micro SUVs, the Punch, and the Exter, but the former is a 3-cylinder while the latter is a 4-cylinder. Although the Punch produces 72.5bhp of maximum power, its segment-best 103Nm of peak torque is what sets it apart from the other contenders. For those unaware, the Punch starts in CNG mode immediately, in contrast with comparable CNG vehicles on the market. The model will follow the Tiago, the Tigor, and the recently introduced Altroz as the manufacturer's fourth CNG product. 

The Nios, the Aura, as well as the Grand i10, have the same powertrain as the Exter. The new compact SUV puts out 67.7bhp of peak power and a respectable 95.2Nm of torque. The Hyundai Exter CNG is stated to have a fuel economy rating of 27.1km/kg, whereas the Tata Punch iCNG claims to have a fuel efficiency figure of 26.99km/kg.

With similar features including projector headlamps, LED DRLs, an electric sunroof, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, the Punch and Exter CNG are feature-rich options. Tata Motors has upgraded the Punch's specifications to include a CNG option, thus it has several additional amenities including push-button start-stop as well as auto headlights. The Hyundai SUV including in its mid-spec versions is available with CNG and has additional perks in the form of climate control and a larger infotainment screen.

The safety suite on the Exter is more comprehensive compared to the Punch's. Besides this, a rear parking camera, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and rear parking sensors are some of the common features available on both models.

The Punch iCNG provides a wider range of variants, with prices beginning at Rs 7.10 lakh for the Pure version and going up all the way up to Rs 9.68 lakh for the top-of-the-line Accomplished Dazzle S. In contrast, the Hyundai Exter CNG only comes in two variants, the S and SX, priced at Rs 8.24 lakh and Rs 8.97 lakh, respectively. All prices are ex-showroom.
