Updated BMW 1 Series revealed

BMW gives the current 1 Series its final makeover as it'll be replaced by an all-new model in 2018. 

BMW has given the 1 Series a mild makeover – which in all probability is also the last update for the current generation hatchback. Updates on the refreshed model include subtle design tweaks, but more importantly, the hatchback now gets a new infotainment system and a cabin that’s been slightly redone.

On the outside, it’s hard to locate the changes because, technically, there aren’t any. BMW has just added a special “Shadow” edition trim that comes with a couple of panels painted in black in the name of exterior updates. For example, the kidney grille is black and so are the wheels. The LED headlamps and tail-lamps also get “smoked” treatment for the same reason. The exhaust tip is also tinted black in the Shadow line models. Two new paint options have been added to the list – Seaside Blue and Sunset Orange.

Updates on the inside, however, are more apparent. There’s a new instrument cluster that now gets a gloss black panel. The air vents have been redesigned, too, while the power windows switches get chrome treatment. The biggest change is that the 1 Series gets the updated iDrive system. The refreshed model also gets a central 8.8-inch touchscreen display that comes with Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity.

Under the hood, things remain unchanged. This means the 1 Series will continue to be offered with three-, four- and six-cylinder engines ranging between 1.5-litre and 3.0-litre. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic. Drive still goes to rear wheels - which won’t be the case with the next-generation model. AWD is optional on select models.

The current BMW 1 Series will be phased out in 2018 to make way for the next-gen model. The 2018 BMW 1 Series will be based on the firm’s UKL platform – like the new X1 – and it’ll be available in front-wheel- and all-wheel drive configurations. So, if you happen to be a BMW purist on a budget, the updated 1 Series is perhaps your last shot at the classic rear-wheel drive Bimmer hatchback.
