XUV700, Thar, and Scorpio Help Mahindra Post 31% Sales Growth in March 2023

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) recently declared that their March 2023 auto sales increased by 31 per cent to 35,976 units. The firm reported that it sold 3,56,961 sports utility vehicles (SUVs), a 60 per cent increase over the previous year.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) finished the fiscal year 2023 on a very positive note. Total wholesales reported by the company's passenger vehicle division were 359,253 units, a respectable 59 per cent increase from the previous year (FY2022: 225,895 units). The total for FY2023 represents an increase over the 254,351 units sold in FY2019, making it the firm's highest-ever sales in a fiscal. In March 2023, the homegrown auto manufacturer sold 35,997 units, up 30 per cent from the previous month, and 35,976 units, the best sales number for an SUV. Meanwhile, the deliveries for the XUV400 commenced in the country at the recently held Convergence India Expo 2023. The Mahindra XUV400 was launched in India with a starting price of Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The e-SUV is available in two models: EC and EL. The entry-level EC costs Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while the top-tier EL costs Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Bookings for the model commenced for a token amount of Rs 20,000.

Mahindra March 2023 Sales Figures

Since utility vehicles make up all but one of the company's products, Mahindra has also recorded its highest-ever SUV sales at 356,961 units, up 59 per cent YoY. The firm, whose lineup includes well-known models like the Bolero, the Scorpio, the Thar, the XUV300, the XUV700, the XUV400, and more, has witnessed enhanced sales given the surging demand for UVs in India. There is currently a long waiting list for the majority of these models. Consequently, it was obvious the automaker would have a record year. In fact, FY2023's first eight months (April to November 2023) already saw cumulative sales surpass FY2022's 225,895 units, reaching 231,413 units. Additional 127,840 units were sold over the following four months.

Sharing his thoughts on FY23's sales performance, Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M, commented, “We are delighted to close the year with the highest ever numbers in almost all segments of the business. Our SUV business recorded all-time high numbers, with a growth of 31% in March 2023, while it recorded a 60% overall growth in FY2023, on the back of good demand across the portfolio.”

According to a recent statement from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), the iconic off-roader, the new Thar, has reached a production milestone of 1 lakh units. The Mahindra Thar has reached this production milestone in less than 2.5 years, showing the SUV's growing appeal and popularity in the country. The Thar is now available in both 4x4 and RWD configurations, giving buyers more options. The all-new Thar was unveiled in August 2020, with deliveries beginning in October 2020. It had a new design language, more capabilities, and petrol and diesel engine options with MT and AT gearboxes. The new Thar, which was initially launched in 4x4 form, is now also available in RWD form, making it more affordable than before. While the RWD version is intended for buyers looking for a budget-friendly high-stance SUV with a lifestyle design and built for both highway and city use, the 4x4 version is intended for off-road enthusiasts and includes features such as a mechanical locking differential and a shift-on-the-fly transfer case.

On the mechanical front, the Thar is available with one petrol engine and two diesel engines. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 150bhp and 300Nm. It has either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the oil burner is available in 1.5-litre and 2.2-litre diesel engines. The former produces 130bhp and 300Nm when paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a torque converter, while the latter only produces 117bhp and 300Nm when paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is only available in the SUV's 4x2 version.
