This was not an article anyone here at autoX either expected to or ever wanted to write. The last gasp of 2013 brought with it news of a ‘serious injury’ while skiing that had left former seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher in critical condition, requiring surgery and sedation, from which he has not yet (at the time of printing) fully recovered.

It was ‘big news’ for sure but no one particularly felt like further advertising the fact that F1’s most dominant driver – as well as one of its most controversial – was fighting for his life after sustaining an injury to his head in a fall while skiing when he accidentally went off a demarcated course.

The endless media speculation, including news of a less than ethical member of the press disguising himself as a priest and sneaking into the hospital, didn’t make for very easy reading while all we wanted was news of a recovery or at least improvement.

It may be months, however, before we may get to hear news of Schumacher’s health improving to the point that he regains consciousness.

The accident – one that is reportedly common among skiers both new and experienced – puts into perspective a person’s mortality and how you should really think twice before wishing ill on someone.

As a new F1 season rapidly approaches, it won’t seem right for one of the figures that lead to its global popularity to remain in such a state.

Our thoughts are with Schumacher’s friends and families while our memories drift towards the on-track moments that made even those who may not have been his biggest fans to stop and acknowledge his speed, skill and grit.

The last quality may just be his biggest asset now.
