Tata T1 Prima Race behemoths go racing again as we witness the action from the sidelines.

Not too long ago, if someone asked you to go watch truck racing in the country, you would’ve probably headed to the nearest highway instead of a racetrack. But, thanks to Tata Motors’ T1 Prima Truck Championship, things have changed drastically since 2014. This year marked the fourth edition of the heavyweights racing, and suffice to say, it was quite a spectacle just like the preceding years.

The 2017 Tata Motors T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship concluded at the Buddh International Circuit on March 19. The event comprised three categories – Super Class, Champion Class and Pro-Class and four races, one each in Super- and Champion-Class, and two in Pro-Class. The race day kicked off with the Super Class category, which sees rookie truck drivers battle it out for the top spot. The participants shortlisted in this category are Indian truck drivers, who are selected through the second edition of Tata’s T1 Racer Program (TRP), which was launched in 2016. In this category, UP based truck driver Pitambar (29) was victorious, followed by Shivnihal Singh (40) and Gurujant Singh (33) in second and third spots, respectively.

Next up was the Champion Class, which comprised 10 finalists of 24 Indian drivers selected from Season 3. Nagarjuna (29) won the race in this category again this year, while Malkeet Singh (34) and Bhag Chand (32) completed the top three.

While it’s heartening to see Indian Truck drivers battling out on the racetrack, the real deal of the day was, of course, the Pro Class category, where professional truck drivers from across the world go neck and neck. The first race in this category saw David Vrsecky of Team Dealer Daredevils take the top spot on the podium, followed by Gerhard Korber and defending champion David Jenkins in second and third, respectively. The last race for the day as well as the Pro Class category was lot more intense. David Vrsecky took the chequered flag from Norbert Kiss with a gap of just 0.257s after a 15 laps! David Vrsecky was also handed the trophy as the overall winner.

SAT 1845 (1)Tata used the fourth edition of T1 Prima Racing to showcase its all-new T1 Prima racing truck. Propelled by a 12-litre engine that delivers 1,040bhp of mad power and 3,500Nm of monstrous torque, the new T1 race truck is capable of doing 0-160 km/hour within 10 seconds. All the other components have been heavily reinforced to match the increase in firepower. As of now, Tata hasn’t confirmed if the new T1 race truck will be racing in the main event.
