F1 team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is the first motorsport stakeholder in the world to receive the FIA Institute’s environmental award for achievement of excellence. The accreditation scheme – Environment Certification Framework – is developed in partnership with environmental consultancy Det Norske Veritas (DNV), as well as the FIA Institute's sustainability advisory panel which is composed of experts from across motorsport. It is chalked out so that national sporting authorities, teams, circuits and manufacturers can achieve a new standard in environmental management.

These organizations have to sign up after which they are rated against three levels. The achievement is measured and they are provided with a benchmark so they know which areas require improvement. The environmental experts from the FIA Institute bestowed this honour on Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 team for showing a deep commitment towards environmental awareness throughout their organization. The award is part of a broader initiative between the FIA and the FIA Institute aimed at evaluating and reducing the environmental impact of motorsport.
