We had the Elevate with us for just two months, and as I type this, it has already gone back to Honda. So yes, this was a short long-term test. Still, our time with it was enough to understand exactly where the Elevate shines and where it falls short.
Let’s start with the positives. The Elevate’s biggest strengths are its reliability, comfort, and overall space and practicality. It’s fuel-efficient, honest in its execution, and very much a form-follows-function kind of SUV. Its ADAS suite is among the best in the mass-market space — as our Mega ADAS comparisons have repeatedly proven. 
There are, however, more than a few occasions when the Elevate feels out of its depth. My biggest complaints are its high NVH and mellow performance, especially when compared to its key rivals. As you may have read in Sid’s report last month, I took the Elevate on a road trip to the hills. On the first leg, cruising at 90–100km/h, performance wasn’t an issue per se, but the cabin got so noisy that it constantly felt like the engine was being stressed. Over long distances, that gets tiring.
The climb to Shimla was when it went even more downhill for the Elevate. Overtakes demand frequent gear changes, and even at 4,000rpm, refinement is nothing to write home about. The handling is tidy, but you’re so busy figuring out the right-gear-right-rpm that you’re not really having fun. All things considered, the Elevate is mechanically sound, but it lacks the effortless nature and finesse of its main rivals. In isolation, you could easily live with it. Start comparing, though, and it does feel a bit yesterday next to the competition.

Honda Elevate Long Term Report: Month 2 - Fuss Me Not

Two months with the Honda Elevate revealed a sensible, reliable SUV that gets the basics right, but it starts to show its age when pushed hard or compared to rivals.

The sub-400cc segment has been gradually gaining momentum, and the arrival of the Honda CB 300R has only made things even more exciting for enthusiasts.

It’s an exciting time indeed for motorcycle enthusiasts. I still remember not too long ago we’d complain about the absence of enough entry-level ‘fun’ motorcycles for the masses in India. Well, today it’s safe to say that we’re spoilt for choice.&nbsp;

The sub-400cc segment is brimming with products from international manufacturers, such as KTM, Kawasaki, Honda, BMW, Benelli, Yamaha and Suzuki – plus, of course, all the Indian manufacturers. It’s bloody brilliant! And although more international brands arriving in India would certainly make things more exciting, things, nevertheless, are pretty exciting as they are.&nbsp;

Now, the KTM 390 Duke is without a doubt one of the best global products under 400cc, which has also tasted incredible success here in India. The BMW G 310 R isn’t bad either – it alone now accounts for a majority of BMW Motorrad’s bike sales across the planet. Let me also mention the fact that both these bikes are made right here in India. See, I told you – it’s bloody brilliant!

Adding flavour 
Let’s get straight to the point. Honda has now launched their little roadster in India – the CB 300R – which has certainly added some flavour to the sub-400cc segment. The CB 300R was first showcased at EICMA 2017, along with the bigger CB 1000R. The little 300 looks almost identical to its big brother, as both bikes share what Honda calls the Neo Sports Café design. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I can sure as hell say that the CB 300R is no café racer. In fact, the CB 300R looks more like an aggressively styled naked street-fighter.&nbsp;

It’s got agile dimensions, meaning it’s pretty small. I like the chunky upside-down front forks, round LED headlight, slim and sharp fuel tank, small 17-inch alloys and nicely designed turn indicators. The bike has certainly got a lot of character, but what I don’t like is the massive exhaust – it seems out of place – and the really boring side mirrors. Honda could have made this bike look like a pure-bred street killer with some clip-on mirrors and a slimmer exhaust. The bike, however, still looks really good and has really good road presence. Side note – it also gets disc brakes with dual-channel ABS as standard.&nbsp;

A single, you say? 
Yes, the new CB 300R, to the dislike of a lot of people, gets a single-cylinder, 286cc engine. I don’t see what all the fuss is about considering that all entry-level sport bikes get a single-cylinder. Moving forward, the engine is actually quite impressive and can pump out 30bhp and 27Nm of torque. It feels incredibly smooth as you would expect from a Honda, with overall wonderful refinement.&nbsp;

The engine is mated to an equally impressive 6-speed gearbox with high ratios. Now, I know what you’re thinking. You don’t believe these power figures to be impressive, but, trust me, this little engine packs a mighty punch.&nbsp;

If you’re a throttle-happy rider, and you happen to have a wrist that likes to be bent to the max, well then, this little roadster does not disappoint. The reason the CB 300R is so quick on its feet is that the bike only weighs 145 kilograms. That’s nearly 20 kilograms lighter than the KTM 390 Duke. Not only does the bike accelerate quickly, but also has an instantaneous throttle response, which means that you need to keep your wrist in check.&nbsp;

Seriously, I’ve never felt such immediate throttle response from any bike within this segment. Starting from a standstill, within 3 seconds you’ll be at 60km/h and in just 6.5 seconds you’ll be at 100km/h. This means that the CB 300R is less than a second slower than the 390 Duke to reach the 100km/h mark. So yeah, it really is a tiny pocket rocket. The engine rarely feels stressed and you can cruise easily at high speeds all day long.&nbsp;

Twinkle toes&nbsp; 
Not only does the lightness aid acceleration, but it also assists the handling. The bike is so light on its feet that it’s incredibly easy to manage and is capable of making any rider feel confident. The riding position is upright, but your legs rest in an aggressive riding position. The wide handlebar also feels nice. The steering is light and easy, with great feedback from the front wheel.&nbsp;

What also helps in the bike’s handling are the Showa upside-down forks. The bike feels properly planted all the time and remains very stable. It’s stiff, but you can really throw this mighty little bike around as hard as you wish. Attacking corners is fun and easy, and flipping the bike from one corner into the next is enjoyable and liberating. In the traffic, it’s even better, as you can easily navigate through jams without much effort.&nbsp;

The rear monoshock is also on the stiff side, which means that it’s a bit firm on the rough stuff. But still, the bike offers great ride quality. It’s such an easy bike to ride that I really think that novice riders will enjoy this bike the most because of its willingness to entertain you, irrespective of your riding style.&nbsp;

It is expensive 
₹ 2.4 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) is what this bike will cost you. You could get a KTM 390 Duke for that price. You could also get the new RE Interceptor 650 Twin for that price. That’s all true, but it’s also true that the CB 300R is far more comfortable to ride than the other two, and it’s also a lot more versatile. You can practically ride it every day and never get bored.&nbsp;

In terms of the quality of its components, it’s on par with the overpriced BMW G 310 R. And its Honda badge means that it’s probably the most reliable machine out of the lot. But what makes the CB 300R unique in the segment is its unbridled fun factor. This speedy little roadster will always keep you smiling, no matter when or where you’re riding it – and that’s worth every penny.

The bike has a lot of character, thanks to the upside-down front forks, round LED headlight, slim fuel tank &amp; smartly designed indicators.

Honda CB 300R Review: First Ride

Honda has launched their little roadster in India, the CB 300R. Unveiled at the 2017 EICMA in Italy, the CB 300R looks almost identical to its bigger brother - CB 1000R. The price is on par with the BMW G 310 GS, but this one is far more reliable and comfortable than its German rival.

In the world of the mid-range naked bike, Honda looks set to steal a march with the four-cylinder Honda CB650F. We haven’t had a good old four cylinder in quite some time, simply because many companies have abandoned them in favour of more robust mid-range power plants.

In the Honda CB650F, though, Honda may have found yet another winner. It seems to have placed the right bike in the right place – in the tiny target space that its competitors no longer see as interesting. Therefore, the Honda CB650F costs less than the Japanese naked four-cylinder 750/800cc bikes, but it’s also less powerful than them. Similarly, it costs more (but is more powerful) than the 650/700cc twin-cylinder bikes from the other Japanese brands. This elementary equation makes the positioning of the CB very clear and neat. To tell you the truth, even Benelli and Yamaha have 600cc four-cylinder bikes in their lineups. But, if the BN600R is almost unknown, the XJ6 is now an old product. The Honda CB650F, however, is fresh, sporty, and features modern styling. So it made every sense to us to take this motorcycle outdoors and do an extensive&nbsp;Honda CB650F to help you know how well does it fair against the competition.

A LOT OF SUBSTANCE

The Honda CB650F is a rediscovery of how simplicity can make riding so comfortable. Once in tune with the engine, this is one of those bikes that makes you want to push it. It’s surprisingly reassuring with its progressive response. It’s fairly agile in direction changes (helped by its high and wide handlebars, at least by Honda’s standards), and very precise going into and out of corners.

The CB cannot be accused of much, other than a bit of vibrations around 5,000rpm – initially felt on the foot pegs, and then on the handlebars. Its four-cylinder engine is smooth, never feeling like a powerplant that makes compromises. The response to the throttle input is immediate, without any jolt or strange spike, even when riding at 1,500 rpm in sixth gear. The acceleration is not as full-bodied as that of its twin-cylinder competition, but it still delivers power up to almost 6,000rpm without any lag in response. Then, at 7,000rpm, starts the beauty of the four-cylinder engine – and then comes the acceleration that only a ‘four’ can provide, while also generating 15bhp more than the 650/700cc two-cylinder bikes.

From a more technical point of view, however, we can blame the Honda CB650F for a little something. When it comes to the front forks, we would want them less devoted towards comfort and more steady in their tendency to dive suddenly. But this can be solved by adopting a fluid, and less edgy style of riding. Once you do that, you can fully enjoy the goodness of this very communicative front end.

The rear monoshock is more effective – partially helped by the engine’s power output, which is not too aggressive at lower rpm’s. It can’t be severely criticized, however, as it avoids any excessive imbalances – both on the brakes and while accelerating out of the corners – with progressive and predictable behavior from the rider. The gearbox, on the other hand, is quite good. In addition to being very precise, it’s also very fluid in between gear changes.

However, the braking system isn’t exceptional. If, in normal conditions, it’s good for its predictability, conversely it’s not so great during more competitive riding – even when one firmly squeezes the brake lever.

All said and done though, the Honda CB650F turns out to be a very good bike. Certainly, its kudos to Honda for creating a bike that meets the requirements of an extremely wide range of riders – from beginners to seasoned veterans. After an exhausting Honda CB650F ABS, we can’t wait for its launch in India – which is expected in the first half of this year...

Honda CB650F features aggressive design cues from tank to tail. In the chassis, a beautiful asymmetrical swing arm, made of aluminum, is in contrast with the simple twin spar frame made of steel. The headlight incorporates lights at the sides, LED type, like the tail light. Tachometer and speedometer in the instrumentation.

COMMENTS OF THE TEST RIDER

The 16-valve Honda is truly commendable for its linear engine response and power delivery. In this regard, it has consistent mid-range torque (accompanied by excellent throttle response from 1,500rpm onwards), allowing the CB650F to deliver good overtaking capability. The CB delivers good fuel consumption too – the four-cylinder Honda’s efficiency is more than expected, as it consumes roughly what a twin-cylinder of the same displacement would consume.&nbsp;Fabrizio Giulini
