The old Alto K10 was quite popular among folks who wanted an Alto with a peppier engine, and with the second generation model, Maruti Suzuki have decided to carry on the name on a heavily revised version of the second-gen Alto 800. Will the craze continue among micro-hatchback buyers – and that too, with the added convenience of an AMT gearbox? Will the slight hike in Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 price prove to be a deterrent? We find out.
The new Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 doesn't exactly look chic, but there are some nice details that help differentiate it from the Alto 800. The nose appears a bit too simplistic, but the large, swept-aside headlamps look nice, while the bar of chrome atop the radiator grille is sure to pique the interest of Indian consumers. The side-profile remains identical to that of the Alto 800's, but the rear is beefier and we do particularly like the inflated tail lamp design. The overall shape of the car has – as a result – helped improve frugality as well; aerodynamics playing a key role here.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 variants are as follows: LX, LX (with airbag), LXi, LXi (with airbag), VXi, VXi (O), LXi CNG (with airbag) and VXi AMT (with airbag). Features include front power windows, central locking, gear-shift indicator, adjustable headlamps, driver-side airbags, USB auxiliary input, seat belt warning, and a double-DIN audio system.
The Alto K10 has an airy cabin, that boasts of improved width and headroom. A contemporary-looking instrument cluster is very welcoming, the dull-silver accents around and the two-tone interiors – all add up to being rather refreshing. You'll also notice a lot of bottle holders, utility hooks, cubby holes and cup holders in the cabin, making it very practical for small families. The shapely seatbacks have been re-designed in Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 new model to help improve knee room, while legroom could have been marginally better and thigh support is just about average.
Engine Specifications & Performance
Under the little bonnet lies a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that makes 67bhp and 90Nm of torque. Paired to the motor is either a 5-speed manual, or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. In traffic, it's the latter that's most convenient to operate, and seems rather quick in shifting up, while the car also handles inclines without any fuss. The ride quality is a bit spongy, and noise insulation can be better. Expect the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 on-road price to rise and the fuel economy to take a hit at the time of upgrading the motor to meet BS-VI emission norms.
