Mercedes-Benz GLA Highlights
Ever since its launch back in 2014, the Mercedes-Benz GLA has catered to the aspiring luxury SUV customer. Its stylish looks managed to garner the interest of many but was available with two-wheel-drive only at the time of launch. The performance version – the GLA 45 AMG – followed later with all-wheel-drive, while in 2016, the GLA received an AWD system and an off-road mode as well.
The cosmetic alterations carried forward on the new GLA are pretty subtle. It now gets LED headlamps, a new double-blade radiator grille design and a new, re-shaped bumper as well, that looks rounder than before. Also visible is some cladding on the lower portion of the bumper. Along the sides, the GLA gets two bold character lines that give it a muscular stance; also new are the five-spoke alloy wheels. At the rear, the tail lamp clusters have been revised for a newer look. Overall, the GLA is a blend of curvy surfaces and sharp creases that add to a sporty and distinctive look.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA variants for the diesel model are as follows: GLA Class 200 d Style, GLA Class 200 d Sport and GLA Class 220 d 4MATIC, and variants for the petrol model are as follows: GLA Class 200 Sport and GLA 45 AMG. Features include a panoramic sunroof, powered front seats with memory, attention assist, a 11.6cm colour multi-function display, ambient lighting system, powered tail gate and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, among other goodies. On the safety front, it comes equipped with ABS and EBD, parking sensors, reverse camera, brake assist, Electronic Stability Program and 7 airbags in total, for the front and rear passengers.
There aren't too many changes on the inside either. There's a lot of space in the cabin with just the right amount of headroom and legroom at the rear despite the sloping roofline, and the seats are very comfortable – providing good support and ample cushioning. The rest of the cabin is well laid-out, and the sporty steering feels nice to hold. Thank fully, the cabin is a refreshing change from what you get in the A-Class hatchback.
Engine Specifications & Performance
The Mercedes-Benz GLA is powered by two engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol engine makes 181bhp and 300Nm of torque and a 2.1-litre diesel engine sold in two states of tune. The 220d produces 168bhp and 350Nm of torque, while the 200d makes 134bhp and 300Nm of torque. All engines are paired to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. Acceleration from the 2.1-litre engine is strong, with power being delivered in a linear manner. However, the clatter from the diesel engine is evident as you pick up pace. It comes with two driving modes: off-road and individual – both adjust the steering and powertrain. With the aid of hill descent mode, the GLA can deal with slopes without any fuss. The steering feels some, but the ride quality is a little firm.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA's ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 17.9kmpl for the 200d diesel model and 13.7kmpl for the petrol model.
