Volkswagen Polo Highlights
Volkswagen's Polo has been a favourite among a whole lot of Indian car buyers, since its launch back in 2010. It's been the most affordable means of flaunting the VW badge, and still proves to be successful hatchback. With its new 1.5-litre diesel engine, will it continue to be a hit? We find out.
There's no doubting the Polo looks Germanic in appearance, thanks to its clean, subtle lines. Over the years, the front and rear bumpers have been slightly re-styled; the front fascia gets some chrome highlighting and the twin-pod headlamps add to the visual appeal at the front. You will also notice that the fog lamps are new, while the new 15-inch alloy wheels give the car a sporty character. At the rear, though the shape of the tail lamps remain much the same in comparison to the 2010 model.
The Volkswagen Polo variants are as follows: Trendline 1.0L,1.0 L MPI Comfortline,1.0 L MPI Highline, 1.0 L MPI Highline Plus, 1.2 L GT TSI, 1.5 L TDI Trendline, 1.5 L TDI Comfortline, 1.5 L TDI Highline, 1.5 L TDI Highline Plus and 1.5 L TDI GT TDI. Features include a two-DIN audio system that gets Bluetooth, USB and aux-in compatibility and memory card slots as well and steering-tilt adjustment, reverse camera, climate control, cruise control, an auto-dimming mirror, parking sensors, rear air-con vents while on the safety front, it gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, engine immobiliser and child safety locks.
Inside the cabin, the Polo gets a beige and black dashboard that brightens up the cabin, and you'll also notice a new centre console. The leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel is a sporty touch and now gets piano black inserts, with all the toggles and buttons being top-notch in terms of quality. Everything appears to be well put-together, while the front seats are very comfortable and supportive. Space at the rear, however, could've been somewhat better. The stitching on the seats and overall fit-and-finish are all typically Volkswagen.
Engine Specifications & Performance
The Volkswagen Polo gets three engine options to choose from: a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol motor that makes 75bhp and 95Nm of torque, a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 89bhp and 230Nm of torque, and a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbo petrol motor that makes 103bhp and 175Nm of torque. Both, the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre engines are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor is mated a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. The 1.5-litre diesel motor is refined, while power delivery is linear, with a good mid-range. The 1.0-lite motor, on the other hand, is quiet – with good acceleration as well. But if it's performance you're after, look no further than the sprightly 1.2-litre, turbo petrol engine. The steering feels a bit heavy, which is nice, while ride quality is impressive.
The Volkswagen Polo's ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 20.14kmpl for the diesel variant and 18.78kmpl for the 1.0-litre and 16.47kmpl for the 1.2-litre, turbo petrol variants.
