Volkswagen is bringing the Golf R back to the Nürburgring in a serious way. The company has confirmed that a track-focused version of the hot hatch will compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race in 2027. It marks Volkswagen R’s return to international motorsport after stepping away in 2020. The timing is also important because 2027 will celebrate 25 years of the Volkswagen R division. With the Golf R already known for its performance-focused character, the Nürburgring programme gives the brand a chance to reconnect with its racing roots on one of the world’s toughest circuits.

Volkswagen is developing the race car with Max Kruse Racing, a team that has strong experience at the Nürburgring. Racing driver Benjamin Leuchter is also involved in the development work, bringing valuable track knowledge to the project. The company has already revealed a preview model called the Golf R 24H, offering an early look at the design and direction of the future race car ahead of its planned debut in 2027.

According to Volkswagen, the Nürburgring project is not only about motorsport. The company also plans to use the race programme to test and develop performance components under demanding track conditions. Since the Nürburgring is known for pushing cars and drivers to their limits, it provides the ideal environment for durability and performance testing. Any improvements developed through the programme could also influence future performance-focused road cars from Volkswagen R.

Volkswagen has not revealed full technical details yet, but the show car already hints at what is underneath. Large bonnet vents suggest the use of a combustion engine that requires additional cooling, while the side-mounted exhaust confirms it is not an electric setup. The company has also confirmed that the race car will retain an all-wheel-drive system, staying in line with the layout used in the standard Golf R hatchback.

The Golf R 24H features major design changes compared to the regular road-going model. It gets a larger front splitter, wider wheel arches and multiple vents across the body to improve airflow and cooling. These updates are not only for appearance, as the aerodynamic package is designed to improve stability and performance during long hours of racing. The overall design clearly reflects the car’s focus on endurance racing rather than everyday driving duties.

At the rear, Volkswagen has removed the standard rear glass and replaced it with a lightweight panel that supports a large swan-neck rear wing. The race car also features a large rear diffuser and additional aerodynamic elements that further separate it from the standard Golf R. With its wider bodywork and track-focused setup, the Golf R 24H looks much closer to a dedicated touring race car than a production hatchback.

Volkswagen currently describes the Golf R 24H as a show car, although development of the final race version is already under way. Reinhold Ivenz, Head of Volkswagen R, has called the Nürburgring 24 Hours the ultimate test for the brand under real racing conditions. With the project now confirmed, there is already speculation that some of the technology and aerodynamic upgrades could eventually inspire a more hardcore version of the Golf R for the road.
