Volkswagen has reclaimed the Nurburgring front-wheel-drive production car record with the new Golf GTI Edition 50. The hot hatch completed the 20.8-km Nordschleife circuit in 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds, making it the quickest front-wheel-drive production car around the famous German track. Volkswagen test and racing driver Benjamin Leuchter drove the car during the record-setting run, putting the GTI badge back at the top of the Nurburgring leaderboard after several years.

The new lap time puts the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 ahead of the Honda Civic Type R, which had held the front-wheel-drive Nurburgring record since 2023. The difference between the two cars was just 0.358 seconds, showing how competitive the modern hot hatch segment has become. The Renault Mégane RS Trophy-R continues to remain third on the all-time front-wheel-drive standings at the Nurburgring.

Volkswagen had previously tested the Edition 50 and recorded a lap time of 7 minutes and 46 seconds. However, that attempt took place in less favourable weather conditions and was not enough to claim the outright record. The company later returned to the Nordschleife in better conditions, allowing the GTI to deliver its fastest lap.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 320bhp and 420Nm of torque. It is currently the most powerful production Golf GTI Volkswagen has built. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with power sent only to the front wheels.
Volkswagen says the Edition 50 can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 269km/h. The car also sits 15mm lower than the standard Golf GTI and comes equipped with Dynamic Chassis Control for improved handling and stability at higher speeds.

The record-setting car featured Volkswagen’s optional GTI Performance package, which adds Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres, lightweight forged wheels, and a titanium R-Performance exhaust system. Volkswagen also revised the suspension setup with stiffer springs and sharper chassis tuning.
These upgrades helped the Edition 50 stay more stable and responsive through the Nurburgring’s fast and technical corners, proving that the GTI still knows how to put in a proper lap when it matters most.
