Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Highlights
While it was in its second-generation globally, the Indian market witnessed the Tiguan for the first time back in 2017. The Tiguan marked the entry of the VW nameplate in the competent and fast-growing SUV space. With its overwhelming price, however, the Tiguan did not bode well in the market as it was simply dwarfed by the likes of the Toyota Fortuner/Ford Endeavour in size, while the other SUVs like the BMW X1/Mercedes-Benz GLA that were similarly-sized donned a premium badge to make up for the similar price.
Fast forward to 2020, and Volkswagen has introduced the Tiguan Allspace. Essentially a longer version of the standard Tiguan, the Allspace packs three rows and seven seats, much like the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. And with the right price, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace looks like an even more very compelling package. But is it?
To the uninitiated, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace might look identical to its smaller namesake, but there are a few changes that set them both apart. The most prominent change, at the front, is the new dual-slat chrome grille, flanked by revamped LED headlamps. In profile, the added length of 215mm is noticeable, but there are simply no differences apart from that. At the rear, too, the only difference is the larger overhang, which, again, is not that prominent.
The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace variants are as follows: 2.0 TSI. Yes, it might be available in a single variant, but the Tiguan Allspace features a lengthy equipment list. Therefore, it includes full LED headlamps with DRLs, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate with hands-free release, tyre pressure monitoring system, a fully-digital instrument cluster, keyless entry, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, tyre pressure monitoring system, and eight speakers, to name a few. On the safety front, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace new model comes with seven airbags, ABS, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
Compared to the standard Tiguan, there isn’t much new with the interiors of the Tiguan Allspace. However, unlike the black upholstery and dashboard layout of the Tiguan, its Allspace derivative gets a black and beige layout. While the upper half of the dashboard is finished in black, the lower half of the dashboard and the seats are beige. Talking about the seats, the Allspace gets “Vienna” leather seats. The quality of plastics and materials used is great.
Engine Specifications & Performance
Gone is the ubiquitous 2.0-litre TDI engine, for a more refined and cleaner 2.0 TSI engine. Unlike the standard Tiguan, the Tiguan Allspace is a petrol-only model. This also means the standard Tiguan will make its transition from a diesel-only model to a petrol-only one, for when the BS-VI emission norms come into play. The BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre TSI engine is good for 188bhp and 320Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
Since it is a CBU import, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace on-road price puts it up against the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The similarly-sized Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour are relatively more affordable.
