Triumph Scrambler 400 XC

Triumph has launched the Scrambler 400 XC in India as the more off-road-focused sibling of the 400 X. Priced in a similar range as the popular Royal Enfield Himalayan, the Scrambler 400 XC positions itself as a strong contender to the ADV in the mid-size motorcycle segment. Both cater to riders seeking versatile motorcycles with off-road capabilities. We pit these two capable machines against each other to determine which one delivers more value for the modern adventurer.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: Design

The 400 XC features a scrambler-inspired design with some off-road capability, while the Royal Enfield Himalayan is built specifically for adventure touring. However, both bikes are capable of more than just city riding, making them direct competitors in the segment.

While the Scrambler 400 XC looks mostly like the 400 X, some changes make it tougher and more off-road ready.

The plastic engine bash plate is now metal for better protection and a tougher look. It also gets a small flyscreen and a higher front fender for a more adventure-focused style.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 has a more practical design. It features a round LED headlight, a split seat, a large fuel tank with guards, and a clean rear with integrated indicators.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: Engine

Although the Royal Enfield Himalayan has a slightly larger engine displacement, both it and the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC deliver nearly identical performance on paper. Each uses a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed gearbox.

The Scrambler 400 XC puts out around 39.5bhp, while the Himalayan 450 edges ahead slightly at 40bhp. Torque figures are close too, with the Himalayan producing 40Nm, just a touch more than the Triumph. This near-parity in output positions both bikes as solid choices for riders who want capable performance across city rides, highways, and light off-road trails.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: Hardware and Features

Both the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC and Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 come equipped with a 43mm USD fork at the front and a rear monoshock, along with a 320mm front disc brake. The difference lies in the rear braking setup—the Scrambler uses a 230mm disc, while the Himalayan features a larger 270mm disc. Dual-channel ABS is offered on both.

In terms of wheels, the Scrambler 400 XC runs on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cross-spoke wheels with tubeless dual-purpose tyres. The Himalayan uses a more off-road-focused setup with a 21-inch front and the same 17-inch rear, fitted with knobby tyres better suited for rough terrain.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: Prices

While the Himalayan 450 may seem like the more affordable option with a starting price of Rs 2.85 lakh (ex-showroom), that advantage shrinks quickly when you consider the Kamet White edition, which is priced at Rs 2.93 lakh. At that point, it’s almost on par with the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC, which comes in at Rs 2.94 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
