In August 2024, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR emerged as the best-selling hatchback, surpassing the Swift, which had won the top spot in July. It sold 16,450 units, a 5.60% increase from the previous year's 15,578 units. In terms of the hatch segment overall, the sales plummeted to 83,129 units, showing a 22.92% decrease from 1,07,844 units sold in August 2023. Maruti Suzuki WagonR
From second place in July 2024 sales, the WagonR rose to the top spot last month. The hatch comes in four core variants (LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+) and two engine options (a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol). The 1.0-litre petrol unit produces 67bhp and 90Nm, while the 1.2-litre petrol mill develops 82bhp and 113Nm. The car has a Maruti Suzuki's Heartect platform and is priced between Rs 5.55 lakh and Rs 7.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Swift sold 12,844 units in the previous month, representing a 31.14% year-on-year decline from 18,653 units delivered in August of last year. For the uninitiated, 16,854 units were sold in July 2024, making the Swift the top-selling model. The car has five versions ( LXi, VXi, VXi (O) ZXi, and ZXi+), and is priced between Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 9.60 lakh (both, ex-showroom). It is equipped with a Z-series 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit that produces 80bhp at 5,700rpm and 112Nm at 4,300rpm.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
In the previous month, the Baleno retained its third position on the list from July. The hatch sold 12,485 units in August 2024, a 32.57% drop from the same time the previous year. Mechanically, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno has a 1.2-litre Dual-Jet petrol engine (89bhp/113Nm) that can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. It also sports a CNG powertrain. The Baleno has four primary variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha. It costs between Rs 6.66 lakh and Rs 9.83 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Maruti Suzuki Alto
Despite an 11.01% YoY dip, the Alto ranked fourth among the best-selling hatchbacks in August. It sold 8,546 units, as compared to 9,603 units in August of the previous year. The hatch has four major variants: Std, LXi, VXi, and VXi Plus. It is equipped with a 1-litre Dualjet petrol engine that generates 66bhp and 89Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The hatch is also available with a CNG drivetrain. Price-wise, the Alto retails between Rs 3.99 lakh and Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios was the fifth best-seller last month, despite a year-on-year drop of 26.57%. Compared to 7,306 units sold in August 2023, the hatch sold 5,365 units last month. On the mechanical front, the hatch uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine that develops 82bhp and 114Nm, mated to either a 5-speed manual or an automatic transmission. The same unit with CNG, however, produces 68bhp and 95Nm with a single 5-speed manual gearbox. The Hyundai hatchback has five main variants (Era, Magna, Corporate, Sportz, and Asta), and is priced between Rs 5.92 lakh and Rs 8.56 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
