WATCHES & WONDERS 2023 - This year’s Watches and Wonders watch show

This year’s Watches and Wonders watch show threw up some terrific timepieces, and some which were also quite quirky. We take a look at the ones that really caught our attention. The Black Bay GMT has been a firm favourite of mine – I even bought one last year – and to be honest

TUDOR BLACK BAY GMT

The Black Bay GMT has been a firm favourite of mine – I even bought one last year – and to be honest, I’m very excited to see the GMT now offered with an off-white ‘Opaline’ dial. It looks great, and I might even prefer it to my own existing black dial version.

TUDOR BLACK BAY 54

The Black Bay 54 comes in a new case size of 37mm, and might be one of the best sports watches for everyday use. The lack of a date window also makes the dial appear purer and cleaner, in my opinion.

Rolex Perpetual 1908

The replacement for the Cellini dress watch in the Rolex line up is here, and I think it looks fantastic. At 39mm, it also seems like a wearable size, and I think the overall design aesthetic is classy and quite subdued. It could be a great addition to your watch collection.

ROLEX DAY DATE

One of the biggest surprises of the show were the release of six new Day Date’s featuring champlevé enameling in yellow gold, white gold, and Everose. The design is polarizing and while some might love it, I don’t think they are really my cup of tea.

TAG HEUER CARRERA CHRONOGRAPH 'GLASSBOX'

Continuing the brand’s 60-year celebration, the new Carrera is called the ‘Glassbox’ for its domed, curved, crystal which gives it its signature look. Featuring an in-house movement, I think it’s a great homage to Tag’s long history.

JAEGER-LeCOULTRE REVERSO TRIBUTE CHRONOGRAPH

Another variation of the iconic Reverso, this edition features a skeleton chronograph on the rear end of the dial, and I think the combination between the formal front face and the technical rear looks simply gorgeous.

ROLEX GMT MASTER II

While the Rolex GMT seems to be a rare to buy as unobtanium – trust me, I’ve tried getting one – Rolex has come out with two new versions, one in gold and one in two-tone. If you’re looking to buy one, I wouldn’t get my hopes up though.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN OVERSEAS

One of mainstays of the brand, the Overseas now gets a retrograde date complication – which is a signature of the VC brand – but in a sporty case. It also gets a moonphase indicator along with an age of the moon indicator and I think it looks gorgeous.

Designed to mimic the speedometres of classic cars, the new version of the Carrera Chronograph has a colour ring running around the top of the dial giving it a vibrant and interesting look, and associating the watch with the brand’s rich motorsport history.
