It was in February 1984 that the world was first introduced to the BMW M5 at the Amsterdam Motor Show – thereby marking the invention of the sports saloon category. This created a class of car that looks like a regular four-door sedan, but has the performance of a sports car. So, basically, it created cars that were tailor-made for the adage, ‘Wolf in Sheep’s clothing’. The first car was based on the E28 5 Series, and it utilized a 535i chassis with a modified engine from BMW’s M1 supercar. But, the lesser-known truth is that the first BMW M5 evolved from the legendary E12 M535i – which was the third road car built by BMW Motorsport in 1980.

Production of the first ever M5 (the E28 M5) began in 1985. But, since the car was first shown to the world in 1984, this year marks the 30th birthday of the iconic M5 – and BMW is celebrating by launching a special 30-year anniversary edition of the sports saloon, which is also the most powerful M5 ever built.

BMW has come up with an exclusive, special version of the current, fifth-generation model that boasts of performance figures that will set the M5 apart from all the other M cars. The car is being hailed as the BMW M5 ‘30 Jahre M5,’ which literally means 30 years of the M5 in German. The 30 Jahre M5 pumps out a whopping 600bhp and 700Nm of torque – and that means it’ll not only be the most powerful series production M5 of all time, but also the most powerful car in the history of the BMW brand. It’ll also have a lightning fast 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds.

The car will also feature strictly exclusive BMW individual-inspired looks and numerous dynamic changes, as well as comfort-enhancing equipment. However, only 300 units will be up for grabs – and that means that this special edition M5 will make for quite a nice collectible.
