McLaren has reorganised the technical structure of its Formula 1 team, resulting in the departure of technical director David Sanchez from the Woking squad. In January, Sanchez switched from Ferrari to McLaren as a strategic measure to strengthen the team's technical department. Nevertheless, it quickly became apparent that his position as technical director, responsible for supervising the development and execution of ideas and performance, did not match the original objectives. As a result, the team principal Andrea Stella will step in for Sanchez as McLaren searches for a suitable successor to head up the team's performance. Stella was appreciative of Sanchez's time with the team. Sanchez's departure has triggered a series of changes within the team structure.

Andrea Stella said: "Following thoughtful discussions between David Sanchez and the Team Leadership, the mutual decision has been taken for David to leave the team. Upon our joint reflection, it became apparent that the role, responsibilities, and ambitions associated with David’s position did not align with our original expectations when he agreed to join us in February 2023. Recognising this misalignment, both David and I agreed that it would be best to part ways now, so to enable him to pursue other opportunities that will better leverage the full scale and breadth of his remarkable skillset. We greatly and gratefully value the contributions that David has made during his relatively short time with us, and we wish him the best in his future endeavours."

David Sanchez added: "I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this team. While the role we envisioned and had agreed to was not aligned with the reality of the position I found, I leave with respect for the leadership, admiration for the dedication of my colleagues, and appreciation for the openness and honesty in which we discussed and arrived at this decision. I wish this team continued success as it continues its journey to the front of the grid where it belongs. I look forward to my next challenge within F1."

After Sanchez left, McLaren implemented an updated technical leadership framework. Rob Marshall, who formerly held the position of technical director responsible for managing engineering and design, has now moved into the position of chief designer. Neil Houldey is promoted from his role as deputy director of engineering to that of technical director, replacing Marshall. In the meantime, Andrea Stella will take up Sanchez's previous duties, which have been reorganised as technical director of performance. Stella assumed this position in Sanchez's absence last year during his gardening vacation.

McLaren's technical leadership lineup on January 1, 2024, featured Rob Marshall as technical director for engineering and design, and David Sanchez as technical director for car concept and performance, alongside Peter Prodromou as technical director for aerodynamics.

As of April 2, 2024, McLaren's technical leadership has been reshaped, with Rob Marshall serving as Chief Designer, Neil Houldey as technical director for engineering, Peter Prodromou retaining his position as technical director for aerodynamics, and Andrea Stella assuming the role of technical director for performance.
