Isuzu Motors Limited was founded in
1916 and is headquartered in Tokyo. It is centred on the production, marketing,
and sale of Isuzu commercial vehicles and diesel engines. Known as Tokyo
Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Ltd at inception, it has been
in the field of manufacturing automobiles. The company crossed many milestones
in developing diesel engines with players like Wolseley Motors of England and
DAT Automobile Manufacturing.
The company, in 1934, named its truck
Isuzu. After that the company was renamed to Isuzu Motors Limited in 1949, with
a capital of 150 million Yen. Since then, the company grew exponentially with
the introduction of new Isuzu models and diesel engines, across the globe.
By 2009, Isuzu had produced over 21
million diesel engines globally, employed in vehicles all over the world. Isuzu
diesel engines are used by dozens of vehicle manufacturers, including the Ford
Motor Company and the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi.
Isuzu Motors India Private Limited was
established in 2012 with its headquarters in Chennai. The first set of Isuzu
cars in India were the MU-7 and the D-Max. In March 2013, Isuzu started its
sales operations in India. It sold the CBU units of the MU-7 and the D-Max to
customers through the Hyderabad and Coimbatore dealerships. In June 2013, it
signed a contract with Hindustan Motors Limited for assembling its CKD units at
HML’s Tiruvallur facility.
Isuzu Motors inaugurated its first
manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh in April 2016, to enter the Indian
manufacturing circuit.
